Australia

The Australian wants me to pay to read the article, but the Australian Dictionary of Biography entry is fascinating. Real research went into it.

Oh damn, I keep forgetting about that.

It's because it's a story form today's (yesterday's now) edition. The subscription requirement will go away tomorrow when it's deemed to be old news.

Soz.

I find it wonderful that Lewin's first retrospective is on at this late stage of the peace. History is alive!

It looks like a great site to explore, especially to discover some more of our naturalists and scientists.

Wish I could go and see Lewin's paintings.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives…
You are now living in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours…
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."
- Ataturk, 1934

I'm just about to head off to the Dawn Service. Have a good day, my friend, and should the opportunity present itself, please pass on the best wishes of this Aussie to your Turkish friends.

Gotye and Kimbra face off in music awards

After collaborating on the global hit Somebody That I Used to Know, artists Gotye and Kimbra will vie for song of the year at the 30th annual APRA Music Awards.

Gotye is Melbourne-raised Wally de Backer, whose song of love and neglect is currently number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. It topped Triple J's Hottest 100 and won ARIA awards for song of the year and best video.

New Zealand singer, Kimbra, who contributed vocals on the Gotye track, has been nominated for her own single Cameo Lover.

Goyte is (or was I suppose) a local boy from Montmorency.

Still sort of local. The place at Montmorency was the family home when they moved to Melbourne from Sydney in the early 80s but he's now living in beautiful(?), downtown Frankston.

Here are a couple of quotes from the bio on his website:

But no, I think I'll just continue to launch random and whimsical musical nuggets into the netosphere from the comfort of my secret studio lair, inside the belly of a dormant volcano, out back of Frankston shoppo.

Also, I set up a new home studio on the top floor of a big barn my dad built on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Much of Eyes Wide Open was recorded there after the initial fence samples from Winton started the song off.

Some chaos going on in Parliament these days. I am American, but here is my understanding of the situation: Gillard pulled off a backroom deal to get Peter Slipper (LNP) in as Speaker, which allowed Jenkins to give the ALP an additional vote as insurance against the independent MPs (who have been propping up the otherwise minority government). But now, Slipper has been hit with sexual harassment and expense allegations and Gillard is losing support amongst the ALP and the independents, and apparently there are now calls to bring back Kevin Rudd again! Am I correct?

No, I'm afraid you're slightly off.

This is the History, Literature and the Arts sub-forum.

Australia is about to overtake Spain as the 12th largest economy in the world. Not too shabby for the 52nd largest by population.

And thats a real tribute to some very smart thinking from both sides of the political fence over the last 40 years

I think the fact that we're the 6th largest country by size and have a load of natural resources may have a bit to do with it, too. ;)

Partly. It's not so much the natural resources, it's the infrastructure which allows us to mine and transport them. Plenty of countries have iron ore.
