More Koran burning....this time for a cause!

Oh I'm sure this will tug at the hearts of the Iranian authorities and make them change their mind.


A controversial Florida pastor has burned copies of the Koran and a depiction of the prophet Mohammed to protest the imprisonment in Iran of a Christian clergyman Youcef Nadarkhani.
The burning, attended by 20 people and streamed live over the Internet, was carried out by pastor Terry Jones' church in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, The Gainesville Sun said, and video of the burning was uploaded to YouTube by the pastor's supporting group "Stand Up America Now."

Jones wants a continued war against Islam. That simple.

I hope his church catches fire the next time he tries that crap.

thats a point though, where did he get a picture of the prophet Mohammed from, how did he recognise it, for all he knew it was Cat Stevens

The answer, as with so many things regarding Islam, is "it depends on the place and time."

Ironically, considering the pastor's apparent direction of his most recent action at Iran, Persia has historically been the main Islamic culture which has not shied away from depictions of Muhammad, and even today images of the Prophet and his family are freely available in Iran on postcards and posters.

A foolish and counter-productive tactic by someone who is probably more interested in getting personal attention than drawing attention to a cause.

- however -

The treatment of minority religious groups in most Middle-Eastern and some African countries (including Iran) is quite shameful and should be scrutinized.

A little off-topic, there was a set of polls conducted by Pew in Egypt during the uprising/revolution which had some... ah... interesting results:

- 90% of Egyptians claimed to support freedom of religion
- 84% of Egyptians favored the death penalty for apostasy by a Muslim

That's because, to them, "freedom of religion" means you're allowed to be a non-Muslim, as long as you start out that way first, but once you become a Muslim (whether by birth or conversion) there's no going back.

It's one of the things that really needs to change in far too much of modern Islam, if "freedom of religion" is to really mean anything.

Not to sound too groovy on this subject, but I tend to think that most of the religious people of the world would be greatly helped by a little lightening up.

i have never understood the need to inflict one's goofy beliefs on to others.

This may be a non-event at the moment, but who knows? It may go viral several months from now (like the previous thing with the newspaper cartoon). There's no statute of limitations for taking offense.

He's burned a Qur'an before, almost exactly one year ago.

After putting it on trial first (the Qur'an was burned only after being found guilty, of course).

Actually, the Qur'an does not call for the extermination of any ethnic group, or any of the practices which we consider abusive toward women. Maybe Jones should just burn the Ahaddith.

Of course, I am assuming that the doofus realizes that there is a difference.

What? I'm sure some clever atheist group has put The Bible on trial before. I'm sure there's been public demonstrations of Bible-burnings. What do you think would happen?
