WW II plane buffs?

The P-38 didn't fare that well as a long-range escort fighter over Europe—the colder weather caused a lot of trouble with the engines and turbo superchargers. In the warmer air over the Pacific, however, the P-38 excelled.

In Europe, the pilots were sitting between TWO enormous heat sources, and couldn't get any of it!

The P-38 was, however, in the words of Hub Zemke "as steady as a shooting stand" thanks to its counter-rotating engines which eliminated torque. Zemke also praised the P-38's armament, with the 20mm cannon and four .50-cal MGs concentrated together in the nose. So the aircraft did have some good traits. :)

from the comments:

I tried searching for photos of these planes to no avail. I am very curious to see what these actually look like! EDITORS' REPLY: You can stop searching. It was a very poker-faced humor piece.

Those are the people who see pictures like this and say, "I always knew they were real! Do you have any photos of them in flight?"

The Crusader was considered "the last of the gun fighters" in Vietnam, but looking at the kill record, most of those were with Sidewinders and Sparrows.

However, see how that went: They introduced Phantoms without guns, but had to retrofit them. Even today, most fighters still have guns.

Some of the C and D models were fitted with gun pods, but the E came equipped with the 20mm M61.

Some thought the F-4 was ugly as sin, but some of us thought she was the most beautiful girl in school. I will admit, as some have said, she looked like someone stood on her nose and kicked her in the ass!:)

I reckon they look brutishly beautiful. The Turkish Air force has around 150 of them, together with a larger number of classically beautiful F-16s.

Thanks for this thread; it's been a blast.

I am pleased that this year is an even year and therefore there is a Farnborough Air Show this year, especially as this year will commemorate the Queen's 60th with some more vintage planes.

I am happy because I live 3 miles from the airfield and have therefore viewed a number of great planes from my house and garden - I'm looking forward to more wonderful sights and sounds of Merlin-engined magic flying over. Yippee!

I just stumbled across this thread yesterday. Interestingly, we finally had good enough weather to revisit the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum in Rantoul, Illinois Saturday afternoon.

They're making good progress on the restoration of a P-51H Mustang and a B-25 Mitchell. If I were wealthy, they wouldn't have to beg for funds anymore. Took 996 shots, so I ought to have some worth sharing. Many will require stitching, though...I like to shoot as close as possible to the subject.

Well some fighters are pretty, and some are handsome (and some are neither).

The Spitfire, Hawker Hunter, Spad, P38 are pretty.
The F4, F100, Vought Crusader, ME109, ME626 are handsome, often in a grim sort of way.
