"Mia Love won the GOP nomination for the 4th Congressional District race Saturday at the Utah Republican Convention, scoring a major upset after wowing the crowd with a roof-raising speech at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy. The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Mrs. Love took 70.4 percent of the delegate vote, well in excess of the 60 percent required to avoid a primary runoff under Utah’s unique rules. She defeated former state legislator Carl Wimmer, who had been viewed as the heavy favorite. He mustered only 29.6 percent of the vote.
If Mrs. Love, 37, defeats her Democratic opponent, Rep. Jim Matheson, she will become the first black Republican woman to serve in the House."

Love for President?

Utah's not particularly Democratic, why is it a surprise that a Republican might win in a red state?

And from Utah, no less. Someone spike the reservoir with LSD?

Or with LDS, for that matter?

She is a Mormon, and the Mormons seem to be very eager to have a non-white public face to put out there:

Mrs. Love belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members dominate Utah politics, and participated in the church’s recent “I’m a Mormon” ad campaign.

She casts the Church in a good light, so I'm guessing that Mormons will vote for her in a heartbeat.

She raised taxes on her city while she was mayor. So, she'll be ousted by the GOP soon enough.

The comments on the article are just . . . wow.

"Poor woman is probably going to be PALINIZED! I pray for her and truly wish her well."

...someone's gonna ask her what newspapers she reads?

I listened to one of her interviews, and I'd say her opponent is in big trouble.

I think this is proof that rational Republicans can actually be liked by Democrats. At least what I have heard of her to date says she could become a real political force.

And yet she's a Mormon, despite being black, female, and rational. The human brain truly is a fascinating thing.

I saw her promo video. She's a talented politician. Very personable. Too bad she seems to be a far right winger (Gun owner! Conservative!) but I can certainly see the appeal. Good for her.

Ugh... A black Republican and a Mormon. Yuck. As a black Liberal atheist i'm not a fan of her party line but good her for her. *forces smile*
