Santorum is Dropping Out

I like his using his daughter's healt as an excuse. The fact he seemed to be headed for a major defeat in his home state of Pennslyvania had nothing to do with it.......

God, for Santorum to lose his home state would be the most publicised defeat to happen in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since July of 1863.....

His daughter is really beating the odd. Edward's syndrome is really evil.

Poor little sausage, she will be lucky to make it to ten years of age.

He must know this, so every single medical crisis could be the end of her life.

No way! I was hoping to vote for him in the primary. He would have been far more likely to lose against Obama in November.

Yes well. Hell yes way.

He may have been "for more likely to lose to Obama," but that would still give him a small chance of winning. In in my book, a nonzero chance of a "President Santorum" is way too *********** high.

And this might set him up to be the nominee is 2016. If Romney loses in 2012, then the Republican base might say that he was not conservative enough to win the election, so they vote for a "real" conservative in 2016, which might be Santorum. Then "the true conservative" loses in 2016 to whomever the Democrats run that year and the Republican party finally has to realize that running to the extreme far right of their base isn't working for them and starts to swing back to the middle again. They've got to do something to reach out to minority voters and get them into the fold because the old, white Republican guard is dying off.

I did vote for Santorum in the primary, for exactly this reason. But surely, by now you must have known there was no chance of him getting nomination?

Considering how many times by now Santorum has compared his campaign to that of Ronald Reagan in 1976, it is obvious he is angling for 2016. And sees humself as Second Coming of Reagan.

100% agree. With a nutcase like Santorum, you want to put him away as quickly as possible.

Problem is there will be a number of Republicans running as "true Conservatives" in 2016. And at least a couple of them will not have Santorum's negatives.
Huckabee, for instance, is probably the same as Santorum on the issues, but he comes across as a lot less threatening then Santorum does.

Yeah, I see Huckabee making a serious go for it in 16. Not only is he infinitely more likable, he also has a libertarian streak that appeals to the "small government" wing of the GOP. Santorum, in contrast, called those sorts of ideas "dangerous."

I will give Santorum one piece of credit. He didn't waffle and say crap like "I'm going to reassess my options" or "I'll still be a player, just more in the background" or similar stuff that Cain and Perry and Gingrich vomited. He quit, clear and clean. Ron Paul, on the other hand, will never quit as long as the money keeps rolling in.

While he is pretty disgusting in many ways, he's better in defeat than any of the other dropouts.

Gingrich is still in btw, and saying now conservatives have a real choice.

Man, Newt sure loves the limelight.......
It is a sign of how insignificent his campaign has become that the GOP leaders are putting no pressure on him to quit. Not worth the trouble.

Agreed.
I really like Dana Milibanks in the Washington Post statement on the Gettysburg site...which I admit was better then mine:
That Santorum ,in the Pennsylvania Primary, thought that he was General Meade rallying the Union troops on the First Day of Gettysburg, but then the polls showed that he General PIckett leading a suicidal charge.

I rather like the idea that folks with whom i disagree can still behave honorably. Perhaps I'm an idealist like that.

*Hutch enters pedantic Historian Mode*

Actually, it was first General Reynolds (who was killed during the fighting) and then General Hancock who rallied the Union forces. Meade didn't even reach the battlefield until well past dark on July 1st.

*Pedantic Historian Mode off*

We now return to our regularly scheduled thread.
