How could Ender's Game be considered pornographic???

Looks like you don't even need to provide evidence to get a teacher suspended and a book banned in South Carolina.

Guess they'll have to take it off the Navy required reading list for junior sailors too!

What the heck? Or is that expletive too pornographic?
Idiots. Ender's Game is one of the most porn-free books I've ever read. True there's some futuristic slang and some tough guy-talk but you'd hear worse in a monestary.

Just another case of people looking for something to be offended by. As the link suggests, these people need to read a little more science fiction, specifically Farenheit 451.

Did you read the entire story? Didn't think so. For whatever reason the school system is maintaining that the teacher is in trouble for having read some books in class, one of which is Ender's Game. That may have been what the parent said was offensive when they called, but apparently it may have gone rather farther.

According to a news report by local station WRDW, the police incident report in the case claims that the teacher read “pornographic material from the Internet to the students in class. One of the stories was about prostitutes having their faces covered with ejaculation.” But according to the WRDW report, the school is still maintaining that the offending material was just three books that the teacher read to class, which were primarily offensive due to swear words. (Thanks to AJRimmer for pointing us to this.)

The only thing I can think of is that there are few mentions of the boys being naked.

Not sure we're reading the same article, even though I clicked your link. It seems to say that the pornographic material was read by the teacher off the Internet, and that after investigating that incident, the school also decided some of the language in the Card book was inappropriate for the class. It does not say the school claimed Ender's Game was pornographic.

Oh. Damn. Scratch that one off my list then.

Did you read the press release from the school district? Didn't think so.

The Aiken County Public School District releases the following information in connection with recent inquiries about allegations of inappropriate materials being utilized regarding the District’s literacy initiative by a teacher at Schofield Middle School.

This incident involved a student’s complaint concerning materials characterized by the student and his parent as pornographic. The complaint was communicated to the school last Friday and followed by a conference with the school administration Friday afternoon. The administration gathered a written statement by the student (normal procedures) and initiated an immediate investigation, indicating to the parent after reviewing the student’s statement that the investigation would continue. The administration, concerned with the report that the books in question being utilized by the teacher had curse words and terms that might not be age appropriate, continued the investigation on Monday the 12th. Early that morning, during the on-going review of these books and the gathering of more information about class occurrences, the administration was notified by law enforcement that the parent had filed a complaint with them as well.

Pending the investigation of this matter and the exchange of factual information with public safety, the matter has continued to be investigated and parent concerns dealt with. Two of three books that had been selected and utilized by the teacher were determined to have materials (primarily swear words) and, in some instances, subject matter terminology that the school administration considers inappropriate for the middle school age. At least one staff member is presently on administrative leave while this matter is being reviewed and the investigation completed. The District and law enforcement work on a cooperative basis, and Aiken Public Safety will determine if any of the events in question violate the law. The administrative investigation will include a determination as to the timely following of reporting protocol, based upon all factual circumstances surrounding the nature of the complaint. Matters that involve personnel considerations are dealt with promptly but must take into account reasonable measures to protect the privacy of students and staff.

Highlighting by me. They do not identify which book is which in the press release. They do say it arose from material the student and parents characterized as pornographic.

The only thing I can think of is when wossname puts the "desk" (pad) on his lap with a picture of an oversized penis going back and forth.

Oh, wait a minute. I thought of something better. People are stupid in South Carolina. My mistake.

It says this in an update:

We’ve got calls out to the school, the police, and the school district. We’ll post an update when we learn anything else.

Maybe it was a bit like in Back to the Future where a student was pretending to read Enders Game but was actually flicking through a copy of "Ooh-La-La".

I talked to Orson on a radio talk show a few years ago and enjoyed the conversation thoroughly. He is (or was then) a big Mitt Romney supporter.

Card is a giant woo. He believes creationism has scientific merit and that there is a conspiracy theory to promote global warming. He is also on the board of the National Organization for Marriage, so he is more than a little bit of a jerk (the cleanest term I could use and not be "pornographic").

Card wrote a few good books a while ago. I suggest everyone read them. He has gone down hill since.

FWIW, he appears to be endorsing Gingrich.

BS! Nobody's a big Romney supporter. Not even his wife.

We are assuming that the people who complained used the word "pornographic" to describe the objectionable material. Do we know that that is what was said or did the game of "telephone" pick up that particular word?

Even if we had a direct quote from the student and parent, and even if they did use "pornographic", isn't it possible that they simply used the wrong word? If it was Ender's Game they were complaining about, maybe they meant "indecent" or "obscene" or "graphic" but none of these words came to mind. The more common word may have beaten the others.

What nonsense. Ender's Game should be banned because it's a terrible, terrible book, not because it's pornographic. ;)

When I was in sixth grade, c. 1962, I read Bullard of the Space Patrol, my first scifi novel. I used to read very fast to get past the pages with the word "damn" on them, for fear the teacher would confiscate the book. (This despite the fact that I got it from the classroom bookshelf.)

Sounds like the folks in SC are still in the 6th grade.

The only thing pornographic about Ender's Game is how Card utterly fornicated the book by adding the last chapter to it, which I don't seem to recall was there in the original serial/story. The book told a compelling and dark story without that last chapter. But on the other hand, I think it was part of his bridge to future sequels ... I'll stop now, it's a very, very old pet peeve.

One of the stories was about prostitutes having their faces covered with ejaculation.”

Hmm, was that story written by Orson Scott Bukakard?
