The Incredible odds of fulfilled bible prophecy

I'm sorry but you need to phrase you claims in a way that makes sense DOC. You lose five hundred dollars, please go back and try again. Do not pass Go and do not collect two hundred dollars.

To TimCallahan, has anyone removed any of your posts. I made a copy of one your posts that included the statement:

"The city of Babylon welcomed the Persians under Cyrus as liberators and opened their gets {sic} to them, since the Babylonians hated the Chaldeans and saw them a usurpers. The city was taken without any bloodshed or destruction.

I found the above on the web when I searched, but I can't find it in the actual thread any more. The web says it's on page 19 and 21 of this thread but when I go to those pages I can't find the post.

Here it is on page 21 (quoting an earlier post and pointing out that you hadn't responded to it), and here is the original on page 19.

Look a little harder next time.

Are you retracting that statement?

DOC,

Here are two links that I think you are looking for....

I believe I've responded to all of his points except the one dealing with Babylon.

I not that you haven't linked to the specific posts where you did this. By your own rules, that means we can ignore your claim that you did.

The second URL is not loading for me at this time.

Works fine here. It doesn't matter in any case, because the entire text of the second link is quoted in the first one.

I believe I've responded to all of his points except the one dealing with Babylon. I should get to that by Wednesday. The second URL is not loading for me at this time.
And I believe you have challenged the very nature of the use of pronouns and grammar in order to claim prophecy fulfilled.

If you are willing to claim the bible is so poorly written as to have ill-defined pronouns, how can we take any of your arguments seriously?
How can YOU take the bible seriously if you honestly believe that it is such a poorly written text?

BTW, DOC, the document stating that Babylon surrendered peacefully is a preserved document from that very time. It is the Cyrus Cylinder. You may want to look it up.

Up til now, there hasn't been one OT prophecy which can be said to have come to pass, is there?

Not having commas, other punctuation, or verse numbers probably didn't help. and I doubt many of the prophets took a writing or grammar class. And if they didn't have paragraphs, they might write, put the scroll wherever, tend sheep, and then start where they left off. I don't even know if they had periods back then.

DOC, do you believe that the Old Testament was inspired by God or not? If it was, then what barrier was there to the prophets writing clearly and unambiguously?

If it was not divinely inspired, then where do these supposed prophecies come from, and what exactly does it prove if they come true?

I suppose that most of the posters in this thread just happen to enjoy debating this particular Christo/Biblo apologetics BS, but I find myself kind of appalled by it. How much mental energy and time have these kind of threads absorbed (especially any involving DOC)? So many smart and well-meaning people blowing large amounts of their personal resources on a dead dead issue, and not in order to persuade a decent number of the sad and confused! I really hope you guys enjoy this stuff enough to justify that expense.

Also, having read these debates with DOC over a couple of years, I get a clear impression that his mission is to obfuscate, aggravate, bait, and basically tie up the minds of sharp young skeptics whenever possible. He appears to succeed at this, and I reckon he believes it is the Lord's work.

I apologize for derailing to get this off my chest, but I would really like to be convinced it's worth the time. Lots of members here seem to dance when DOC plays his tune, and I can't see myself ever doing that. (I do get sucked into other kinds of debates of course!)

It's very kind of you, but we're not all young, or especially sharp; luckily it doesn't take lot brainpower to deal with the points raised in support of the OP. :)

I'm glad of that, zooterkin, and I'm not surprised given the frustratingly repetitive nature of the argument, but why bother? I don't mean to imply that there is no good reason to debate someone like DOC ("just for kicks" would cover it) - I just don't understand what the actual motivations are. Living in West Australia, I'm possibly ignorant of the more intensely combative religious atmosphere prevailing in North American cultures. Being mostly in Berkshire, I'd guess your world would be more similar culturally to mine. . .

If it's not too rude (and I fear it is) can I ask why you personally persist in debating with someone who plays so loose with the whole truth-seeking enterprise? Surely it's not in hope of reaching any consensus, or even mutually enjoying the intellectual exercise?

Same reason why some people spend the evening watching american idol.
It doesn't take much time to respond to DOC.

Part of it was summarized by Randalll Monroe.

And then there's the "what else do I have to do today?" factor.

OK, good to know. I particularly get the cartoon too. Thanks for the responses. I genuinely admire the endurance and persistence displayed by everyone who keeps engaging, mostly politely, with DOC and others like him. I don't believe THEIR manners are at all acceptable for a civilized forum, though, and I dislike seeing them rewarded for thinly veiled contemptible mind-games. I don't have the patience, and would be well over my infuriation threshold by page 2 of the thread.

I'll get me coat. :)
