Iran training thousands of women as ninjas

I don't mind too much. As long as they're not training post-adolescent terrapins or tortoises with environmentally-altered genetic code to be ninjas. That would be bad.

How come I hear this *** when civilians talk about it (bear in mind that I am a civilian aswell, but know people in the armed forces of a couple of countries, USA, included) , but the guys that I know who are in the military, they say that we should really not underestimate Iran´s military?

Ignorant civilian or dudes who are in the military? Well gee, I wonder who knows more.

Civilians aren't the ones who end up shot or blown up, so they can afford to have a half arsed, gung ho, Hell yeah <insert country of choice>, all will fall before us, attitude.

Those who are going to have to do the actual killing and dying tend to think these things through a little more.

My particular favourite of this was George W aggressively stating 'Bring it On!!' All ready for death and dying that other people will have to do for him while (if I recall) holding a golf club.

Civilians think war is easy. It is for them.


For the record I am a civilian and a pacifist and I bow to no man in my respect of those who stick their hands up in the air and volunteer to put their bodies on the line to defend their country*. It's something I could never do and I am profoundly grateful to those that are prepared to, in essence, do it for me. Any civilian ever stating that any war, conflict or battle should be easy due to poor enemy combatants, superior firepower or any other reason should immediately be dropped into the discussed warzone where they can establish for themselves how incompetent the enemy are.






(*Any country, I don't really care which, it takes the same amount of bottle no matter which side you're on)

Recall how highly touted was Iraq's army prior to the Gulf War. Recall that Iran fought toe-to-toe with this army for years in an effective stalemate.

Recall how effective Iraq's army proved to be against ours....

Remember that the Irani army was nowhere as equipped as the Iraq army, which was highly mechanized and equipped with modern weapons from both the USSR and the West.

The fact that the Iranians managed to halt them, even tho they were in a sh** state because of the Islamic rebellion, is both a testament to their capabilities and to the iraqs incompetence. I´m just saying be cautious and don´t sell them short, might end up horribly.

The Iranian army had also just been gutted by the post-Revolution purge of the Shah's military.
 
I wonder if they're Queen's Blade-esque ninjas.

Dude Queen's Blade is the funniest damn thing I've ever seen. I support any and all measured to impress its ideals into our social structure. Bring on the scantily clad femme fatales please.
 
The bottom line in any contemporary conflict outside of guerilla war is going to be air superiority. I'd submit that there is really no comparison.

..at that point TOP google suggestion was "iranian female ninjas"

Uuh, Iraq did have a lot of vehicles and tanks, but they weren't advanced. There's a reason the T-72M coined the phrase "monkey model"; the Soviet Union never gave away it's best stuff even to allies, nor does Russia (not too sure about the other successor states). The T-62s and 55s the Iraqis had in greater quantity are even less advanced than the export model T-72M. There's also the substandard ammunition the Iraqi Army was provided with, to add insult to injury.
That being said, the biggest failure of Iraq's army was indeed incompetence. I can't comment on the competence of Iran's army, but they're certainly way better equipped nowadays. Domestic variants of Soviet tech tend to be better than pure export versions (simply by sticking in omitted features); iirc the Iranian Zulfiqar T-72 variant has ERA, fairly advanced FCS systems with a laser rangefinder (omitted from the T-72M), and uses domestically-produced ammunition.
