Colby Quote "The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media."

i bought the book Derailing Democracy a few weeks ago because people were asking about this quote. the quote is on page 13.
take it up with the author.

Hey great! Could you please look at page 13 and tell us - how did the author source that quote? Is there a footnote?

Senenmut -
"So what if the Colby quote is a lie. Sometimes you have to Lie in order to persuade people to believe the Truth. What's wrong with that."

Not surprising.

I confess as a Brit I am not entirely certain of the division of responsibilities between different branches of the US government, but why would the CIA be controlling the US media? Surely the equally-eeeevil FBI should be the one responsible, leaving the CIA to subvert the overseas media?

Or is the CIA so thoroughly despicable it overlooks the internal/external allocation?

(and just to be clear, no I am not being serious and, yes, this is a joke)

The preponderance of evidence shows that the WTC towers were brought down with explosives of some kind, too.

Your "preponderance of evidence" is neither a preponderance nor does it appear to debunk anything. It raises a question only. Even the Snopes citation on the Lincoln quote is unsourced.

It's not a big deal. It just needs to be pointed out here, quite frequently it would seem, that much of so-called 9/11 debunkery, isn't.

If that were true there would be explosive residue in the debris. Find some.

Bumping for Senenmut, since he's now trolling another thread.

As far as I can tell, the Colby quote is not only not proven to have happened, it is flat out wrong. There is however a great overview of how intertwined the CIA had been with the media at : http://www.carlbernstein.com/magazine_cia_and_media.php. Basically, the CIA used reporters as cover, or had agents using media outlets for cover. Certainly not ownership of the media from what I see, however a possible source for the mistaken quote.

Pious frauds are still frauds.

No US government agency 'owns' the media. If the government told them what to do, they'd do the opposite out of pure indignation. The media is complicit in a more tacit way: I recommend reading Manufacturing Consent (Chomsky) to get a better idea.

None of this helps Truthers or their delusions. The scoop provided by genuine evidence of Bush administration complicity in 9/11 would have been huge.

Maybe Colby (or whoever just made up the quote and ascribed it to Colby) mean that the CIA "owns" the media, as in, is so much cooler than the media. The more up-to-date way of saying it would be that the CIA pwns the media. And that's completely correct!

"Who's the coolest guy here?"
"I'm a reporter."
"I'm a CIA agent."
"OMG! Pwned!"

See?

Respectfully,
Myriad
