Confused by an alleged EVP

No. Why?We're discussing ghosts, so I'm using the terminology--the technical jargon--of the "world of ghost" woo.

Your ease of use of the "woo jargon" gave me pause. Especially the John Edward style captitalization of the term other side.

...you didn't see the humor in that? I thought the term "Swedenborgian space" would have been a dead giveaway.

I still don't see why. This whole concept seems grounded. Isn't The Other Side by definition another place, where the rules and general... things are completely different?

Not necessarily. The underlying assumption of...THE GHOSTHUNTERS...AMONG WHOM I DO NOT NUMBER MYSELF (there, hope that's clear to Resume :D)...is that the Other Side is simply an extension of This Side, that it's like Here, only Moreso, and in a different dimension. Thus, you get ghosts who sit down at meals (Banquo), ghosts who cannot give up a lover or child, ghosts who cannot leave the place where they died, ghosts who are jealous, or helpful, or just plain mean.

Why would Firefly obsession and Han Shot First be something a dead person would try to pass as a message to the living? Why wouldn't their message be about something much more important? Even as an obsessive Firefly fan, if I get the chance to talk to the living by any means, I would not say "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.", instead, I would try to give a bit of an info on the people on This Side

But, see, since the underlying assumption of ghosthunters is that life Over There is the same as Life Here, only Moreso, and that the part of you that carries over is your passions, your hatreds, your jealousies, your loves, you would only endeavor to give information about the Other Side if that were the sort of thing you were accustomed to doing obsessively, passionately, on this side.

I'm just saying what is, and what is, is that The Ghosthunters' basic assumptions are twofold: Life Over There is the same as Life Over Here, only Moreso, and that what carries over, what lingers, after the transfer to Swedenborgian Space, are a person's passions and obsessions.

There is another factor though: time. After death, the person will exist indefinitely in his/her EVP-sprouting form. What will they do long after no one remembers Han Shot First or Firefly anymore? What will they do when humankind eradicates itself or leaves to another planet? What will they do in a thousand years? As much as I like to imagine, I don't think Firefly will be on the minds of people in say 3058 anymore...

But see, ghosts don't care about the passage of time, because they are motivated solely by their passions, which are all that lingers from their earthly existence. This is why you can have ghosts haunting castles and cathedrals for centuries--because what motivated them when they died centuries ago is still what motivates them now. Whatever the obsessions of the ghosts of Oliver Cromwell and Mary Queen of Scots, whatever the passions that drove them, have been rendered moot by the passage of time; nobody cares about the English Civil War or the disputed succession of the English throne anymore. So, ghosts who obsess about Star Wars will still be obsessing about Star Wars when the sun goes nova.

Is the theory.

SNIPPED

Well, this whole thing just got unbearably boring for me. If this is the case, then ghost hunting will not be my thing. My implicit assumption always was that The Other Side is different. If it's not I'm not interested in it anymore :boggled:

Thanks for the clarification on the assumption of the Ghost Hunters, Goshawk!
