Buchanan Fired. Leftist Tyranny Triumphant

My days as a political analyst at MSNBC have come to an end.

After 10 enjoyable years, I am departing, after an incessant clamor from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency, and dangerous.

The calls for my firing began almost immediately with the Oct. 18 publication of "Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?"

A group called Color of Change, whose mission statement says that it "exists to strengthen Black America's political voice," claimed that my book espouses a "white supremacist ideology." Color of Change took particular umbrage at the title of Chapter 4, "The End of White America."

Media Matters parroted the party line: He has blasphemed!

A Human Rights Campaign that bills itself as America's leading voice for lesbians, bisexuals, gays and transgendered people said that Buchanan's "extremist ideas are incredibly harmful to millions of LBGT people around the world."

I've never found the "You are just bigoted against bigots" to be all that compelling of an argument. Fun wordplay, to be sure.

I'm sorry, was Buchanan beaten while walking down the street, based on what he is? Did someone drag him behind a pickup truck? Did someone try to stab him with a flagpole, with the US flag still on it*?

Oh, he was just fired from his job, as a commentator, for making racist and anti-Semitic comments? Well, it seems to me that he simply wasn't very good at his job, then. Other commentators have been given far less leeway than he was given, so I'm not sure why I should consider his firing "bigotry".

(*: The guy in "The Soiling of Old Glory" was actually swinging the flagpole, not trying to stab the black guy with it.)

Damn, I was hoping it would be followed by "out of a cannon".

Or possibly "into the sun".

So a guy writes things like...

“The death of European Christianity means the disappearance of the European tribe, a prospect visible in the demographic statistics of every Western nation.”

Referring to the declining population of whites in America: “Mexico is moving north.”

Buchanan on the political left embracing multiculturalism: “What kind of man looks with transcendental joy to a day when the people among whom he was raised have become a minority in a nation where the majority rules?”

Historians will look back in stupor, Buchanan predicts, at twenty-first century Americans “who believed the magnificent republic they inherited would be enriched by bringing in scores of millions from the failed states of the Third World.”

... and is surprised that he got fired. Hasta luego, Mr. Robertson.

Robert Prey, what is your opinion on the matter? Here at JREF, it is polite to include an opinion or comment when one starts a thread about a news article.

Of course he'd like to make it sound like his firing has more to do with his politics than the fact that he's past it. I mean really? Pat Buchanan? Is this still the 1990s? There are people of voting age who have never heard of him, and there are far more entertaining, notable, and younger media employees of the same politics. The media is a business. The topic may be politics, but the business is television.

Well played. Pat can fund his own network, as Glenn Beck seems to have done, and continue his rants there.

Or, he could go to work for Beck. I think I'd bet the over on that one. What's the line?

Point of clarification: By "Bigoted, Intolerant Left", are we talking about people who are opposed to racism? Because that is what it sounds like we're talking about, but some of those words don't fit.

Your instincts are probably right, but it is worth pointing out that liberals can be bigots. You ought to read the JREF forums one of these days, and see for yourself. ;)

On the flip side, in the last day or so, Robert has referred to the left as both "intolerant" and "anything goes". I suspect Mr. Prey suffers more from the tyranny of the dictionary more than any other form of oppression.

eta: Also, I did say some of those words don't fit.

Don't feel too bad for Pat. I'm sure he'll find a job at FOX.

Personally, I'm surprised Strormfront even signed him in the first place.

Wait, what?

I have not read the book he says got him in trouble and do not ever intend to. But I did hear him discussing the book once on some talk radio show and I could see why they fired him.

I just feel embarrassed that I have been mis-using the word 'tyranny'.

That is, if what RP is calling 'tyranny' really is tyranny, I have clearly not understood that term...

Intolerant -- referring to people opposed to free speech for those with whom they disagree. Bigoted -- referring to those who are offended by those who speak in favor of traditional moral values.

Point of clarification: Buchanan? Racism? How so?

Type "Pat Buchanan" into Google and check out the second pick.
