Yep and Edeles used to have a record shop - I remember the look on the sales girl's face when I bought 45 tickets to the 1979 AC/DC concert. I think it was the first time I ever had or used a $100.00 note.

It's also funny the hussle and bussle under the building in the food court and such and you go upstairs and it is all so elegent

The Strand Arcade is equally gorgeous as well, especially when they went to the trouble to restore all the wrought iron in the place
 
As always, Akhenaten, you did a great job with the pictures and text. The horizontal waterfalls are magnificent, I never knew they existed but I always learn something new when you post your pictures. Kudos.

I didn't get any of them! :( I only guessed that No 4 was in Antarctica, but not the name of it. (I eagerly clicked the webcam, but was disappointed by the lack of penguins. ;) :))

I got Talbot and the Opera House. Kicking myself about the Moggill ferry. It reminded me of a crossing on the Murray on a family trip many years ago.

I should have got Hobart, since I've been there. I knew the Opera House immediately, I misidentified the ferry as the Murray ferry in South Australia, I knew the Antarctic base even though I didn't recall its name, and I got the QVB straight away. The others I had absolutely no idea.
 
Friends rally for fading Tasmanian lighthouse

Way down at the bottom of the Apple Isle, a part of Australia's rich maritime heritage is facing an uncertain future


Australia's southern-most lighthouse, on Maatsuyker Island about 10km off the South coast of Tasmania, helped to guide ships through this lonely and dangerous area for 105 years.

Its rare clockwork mechanism for rotating the only light for hundreds of kilometres on one of Australia's most treacherous coastlines from 1891 until 1996 is still in working order.

Unfortunately, however, 121 years of battering by the Roaring 40s and frequent storms that the Southern Ocean hurls at it have taken their toll on the historic structure.​

The Friends of Maatsuyker Island are hopeful that the federal and state governments will grant a request later this year for funds to undertake a comprehensive restoration project.

The group, which co-ordinates the caretaker program, working bees and day trips from the mainland, helped to fund a $10,000 professional assessment of the restoration task.

Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service heritage officer Peter Rigozzi found the restoration would cost $320,000 and warns delaying will increase both the task and the cost.​

Catherine Astrid Salome "Cathy" Freeman, OAM​


Cathy Freeman (b. 16 February 1973) is a former Australian sprinter, who specialised in the 400 metres event. She became the Olympic champion for the women's 400 metres at the 2000 Summer Olympics, at which she lit the Olympic Flame.

Freeman was the first ever Aboriginal Commonwealth Games gold medalist at age 16. 1994 was Freeman's breakthrough season and in that year at the Commonwealth Games in Canada she won gold in both the 200 m and 400 m. She also won the silver medal in the 1996 Olympics and came first at the 1997 World Championships in the 400 m event. 1998 saw Freeman taking a break from running due to injury, returning to form with a first place in the 400 m at the 1999 World Championships. She announced her retirement from athletics in 2003.

Great call out - That night at the Olympics was something special. How she managed to win carrying 20 million Australians on her back is beyond me.

Some may forget but that race generated so much attention, rival networks had little count down clocks in the corner of their screens, so you would know exactly when to cross the correct channel to watch the race. During the race they ran commercials and station promotions so you would not miss any of your favorite show.

It never ceases to amaze me how good TV could be, but never is.

As much as I thought it was all a bit over the top (the media I mean), the thing I couldnt believe about this was, some people were all up in arms about her draping herself in an Aboriginal flag. I still remember her response to those critics was something along the lines of 'yeah someone just handed it to me from the crowd, what was I gonna do, say no thanks?' . Just thought it was a classy comeback and made those idiots look the idiots they were.

The rules at the Olympics are pretty clear about that - you can only carry national flags when you are doing victory laps. What Cathy would do had come up in discussions well before the race, and it seemed everyone was planning to turn a blind eye. Especially given the Aboriginal flag is not seen as a form of political protest but one of cultural identity

Ah didnt realise that. Still it really didnt seem a big deal at the time.

And how much crap has Steven taken over that. In my mind he was there, in the right place at the right time. As he said that race was not 90 seconds, but really 12 years.

If he really represents anything....its never ever ever give up. Cause ya never ever know
 
Australian Kirk Baxter has won an Oscar for his work on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Australian Kirk Baxter has won his second consecutive Academy award with editing partner Angus Wall.

Baxter won the editing Oscar for his work on David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo after the duo won last year for their work on The Social Network.

"We weren't expecting this," Baxter said after beating favourites in the category, Hugo and The Artist.​
