There has been a recent kerfuffle regarding the possession of these isles, possibly influenced by a recent oil discovery in the environs.

A war was fought in 1982 following an Argentine invasion, (my Uncle David was killed in the fighting), which the Argentinians lost convincingly, but recently much rhetoric is being spouted, including that by paragon of international realpolitik Sean Penn.

The BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17045169.

Mr Penn. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17025000.

Is it realistic to expect the Falklands to be handed over to the Argentinian government?.

The Falkland Islanders want to stay British, so we'll be hanging on to the islands for the foreseeable.

Maybe they should draw a line though the middle, and set up troops from the UK and Argentina to help the locals on either side blow each other up...

They've already done that. UK was the winner. Of course, it helps that 90% of the population (not counting sheep) is British. :)
You forgot the penguins. They outnumber the sheep by a factor 2. From wiki:
According to the Falklands Government Statistics there are over 500,000 sheep on the islands
and another wiki page:
Approximately 494,500 breeding pairs are thought to live on the island, 500 of which are King penguins
It seems the penguins are more accurately counted than the sheep. :)

Where's Maggie now we need her, eh?
Where's the Ark Royal when you need it? ;)

Mrs. T. could at least point to foreign policy successes in her continuous handbagging of the other EU leaders, while David Cameron gets laughed out of the room. Would he want to go to war to have at least some success in that arena?

And which side would our crown princess think our country should take in a conflict, what with her being the daughter of one of Videla's murderous gang?

Can't see it. The population of the islands wants to be British, and I can only imagine the outcry if the islands were handed over after people died retaking them thirty years ago.

What I don't understand is the number of people asking whether we should give them "back" to Argentina. We could no more do this than we could give them back to Nepal or Kiribati.

Things must be bad in Argentina for them to be bringing this up.
The British were there before even before Argentina was a country.
Mind you, if it comes to war, it could mean the UK is doomed as Camoron could be re-elected like maggie was.

Anyway, why do actors think they have a good view on world politics? I have a friend who retweets Morgan bloody Fairchild and her views on Palestine, Mia Farrow and some crisis somewhere or other.

I would have pretended to be interested in what Morgan Fairchild has to say... in 1980.

The Falklands are the Argentinian political equivalent of immigration in the US or the UK; talking tough about it is popular with the voters. In practice unless the Argentinians persuade the islanders to support a transfer of sovereignty its not going to happen.

Just think, we could have headlines like this all over again:
