The Incredible odds of fulfilled bible prophecy

"Fulfilled prophecies" is a lame argument because when you actually look up the passages as Tim has done you find that you need the look thru the spectacles of faith to see any relevance between the prophecy and the fulfillment.

So if you can see the 'fulfilled prophecy' you already have enough faith not to need it.

very true.

Responding to a post is not necessarily debunking a post. The prophecies are out there, people can take their time to do their own research -- they've got a lifetime to do it. And I would check more than one translation of any verses you might mention.

Also things do get lost in translating. For example the Hebrew language didn't have comparisons like "good, better, best. That can cause some problems. Also Hebrew has no vowels, and the bible was originally written with no punctuation -- no commas, no periods, no quotation marks, no verse numbers. That can't help matters.

And I've already said I don't have the time in post 412 so your prophecy is after the fact. I'm not the one who brought this thread back after it was dormant for several years, but I'm glad is was brought back. Yes, Ross provided enough info to keep people busy for awhile. If Ross or myself or anyone else made any mistakes interpreting something as a prophecy when it wasn't, that is our mistakes, not the bibles.

Doesn't that mean that we can't trust the prophecies?

Are you going to ignore all the posts by Tim?

Yes, indeed. Since I work as a translator, I know how tricky that kind of thing can be. Imagine, for instance, that I want to say that I am proficient in Hebrew (let's say), but that someone else is even better. I can't say they are proficienter, can I? So then I am left with absolutely no way of expressing that, and the whole translation grinds slowly to halt, thus leaving me without a way to earn a living.

No money, no food, no clothing, thrown out of my house. Death ensues. All for lack of a comparative. Sad.

That's the most sadderest thing I've ever heard. My ferverenterest hope is that DOC is simply more mistakener than he was the lastest time he displayed his ongoing battle with wrongeressness here, and that your superlative skills do indeed remain in demand.

Sincerestly,

Akhenatener.

I am sure that would be a comfort to me, if I could only translate it, but we have no nouns, verbs or adjectives in Swedish (we get by with prepostions), so I have no idea what you are saying, Aberhaten.

But I still feel a little more betterer now, so thank you, oh exalted pharaoh, exaltedererest of all pharaohers.

But surely you're an expert in canine?

Wow - so God set down his literal, inerrant word, which was meant to serve as a guide for the ages, then wandered off and let the meaning get lost to incorrect translation and careless transcription?

Your concept of God is very strange - kind of like the conspiracy theorist's concept of government: all-powerful, all-knowing, and incredibly sloppy.

Very true..

How on Earth could an omniscient god not realise that His Holy Word (TM) would be shattered into hundreds and hundreds of interpretations?

And, of course, ALL of them would be the only TRUE version...

Is it possible that God doesn't exist?

:)

:D

To add: the argument that Hebrew doesn't have a comparative is a non-starter (even if it were true). There would then be no problem in translating Hebrew into Greek/Latin/English/whatever - you just don't use the "extra feature" of the comparative in the other languages. It would only be a problem if Hebrew had a comparative but the target language had not.

You see? Careless, that's all, just careless. If I ever want a universe created, I'm not hiring somebody who pays no better attention than that.

Not creating paper at some stage during Week #1 didn't help things much either.

I seem to remember Moses running around the place with lots of bits of parchment stuffed in his coat of many pockets. Dropping bits here and there whilst carrying the 16 commandments around, talking to burning hedgerows and smashing graven images.
I may be the mosterestest wrong though.

That's about how I remember it as well, and since there was no fiction in those days it must be true.

Since there was no fiction then all those ancient gods must be real. This is going to complicate things no end.

A 95% correct translation might be all you need to understand. There are mediocre preachers, good preachers, and great preachers. Even a mediocre preacher can convert people. Even a bad preacher might give a rare inspired sermon and convert people .

How are we to know which are mediocre or great?
are the mediocre ones the ones that advocate anti-gay sentiment?
Are the great ones the ones that advocate slavery (as supported in the bible)?
Or are the great ones the ones that say the bible is a bunch stories which advocate a moral code that is inferior to what is best for people today.

How would you know it was correct, and why would your hypothetical God be happy with less than 100%? Have you heard about the Wicked Bible? It takes considerably less than 5% to be wrong to give entirely the wrong message.

In the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:14) the word "not" in the sentence, "Thou shalt not commit adultery" was omitted, thus changing the sentence into, "Thou shalt commit adultery"

Impressive dodge, but it serves you poorly. I would very seriously doubt that the translations are 95% accurate.

And even if it was? Still doesn't address the observable fact that the Bible is dead wrong.

While all this is true, what does it have to do with anything?
