Ed Ofama... On Iran

Indeed. I browsed through, and apparently that website considers treaties that they personally support, but the U.S. didn't sign, as well as treaties that the U.S. signed but never ratified, to count as "broken."

Though I am in complete agreement that the U.S. should sign some of those. The landmine ban? Get on that, U.S.

Why?

What good would come from that?

But we know the bad that would come from signing it.

No ... not because slavery used to be legal ... over 150 years ago.

If America was still involved in human trafficking (as they are still involved in breaking treaties when they feel it's in their best interest) and their leaders were debating and possibly planning to attack the country that was involved in human trafficking, then yes, I'd stand up and say, "you idiots are BOTH DOING THE SAME THING!!!"

But you wouldn't, huh?

I edited to add more, presumably after you clicked on it, I believe the addition addresses this.

Hey. Me too. :)

It is quite a bit more than just being the same thing. Iran is openly hostile to its neighbors, its leaders often advocate genocide against one of them, significant unrest and fighting in the Middle East has the potential to harm the entire world economy and Iran is the biggest financial sponsor of terrorism in the world.

It needs to be judged on its own merits, to suggest otherwise is absurd.

You might also want to consider the style of government when making such comparisons. If we decide that our government has become a little too much of a doody head we can vote them out. If the Iranians tire of the doody head behavior of their government, their totalitarian government starts killing them.

MAD has been a deterrent to nuclear war in the past, even with totalitarians, throwing in religious fanaticism adds a very disturbing element.

Here's another way we differ ...

I believe your opinion is different than mine. Not "absurd" ... just different.

Though I do long for the day when hyperbole isn't the preferred coin of the realm in forums.

It leads some people to say "absurd" things.

Your opinion is absurd.

It essentially reads, "If Bush and friends are tried for war crimes, Iran should be physically stopped from developing nuclear weapons, if Bush and friends are not tried, Iran should be allowed to develop nuclear weapons." Does this seem remotely logical to you? On what grounds do you think the consequences of a nuclear Iran are tied to a trial of the Bush Administration?

Actually, I think it was a little more complex than your simple cartoon caricature portrays.

I'd say that your opinion of my opinion ...

is what's absurd.

yes, the american christian right are bloody scary.

I actually thought about saying that that would cause you to bring up American Christians but decided to let you foolishly do it on your own. Even if Bush was, and perhaps future presidents will be fanatical Christians, MAD does apply.

I can only go by what you post, if your view is more complex, perhaps you should explain it better, because that is how it read in your, "I'll make a deal with you," post.

I'll wait for a few more voices to join the thread.

I think we've said enough between ourselves.

and american producers of children-killing land mines, lose bucks.
better kids lose legs than corporate america loses bucks.
I think you'll find that all the land mines which are killing children were proliferated largely by communist governments spreading the revolution you wax wistfully about. In fact, children are still dying today from land mines laid by Cuban soldiers in Angola.

Just a few more of those eggs you have to break for the revolution!

I hesitate to derail the thread but fyi thousands of people have been killed or injured in Vietnam by land mines since the fall of Saigon.
