Obama and the Gay Military...

Is it odd that the first thing I thought of, after reading the story on the BBC website of the repeal of DADT and celebrating America's enlightenment, was "I wonder what Bill Thompson will have to say now"?

No, not odd at all. No, really. I mean, you didn't actually go searching the forum for a long-buried thread and resurrect it, did you? And as for the suggestion that some of us need to get a life, well, that's just outrageous...

Are you saying that even with this, America is a century behind..? :)

I rather think he is. In which century were homosexuals allowed to serve openly in the army in Norway?

ETA: To be fair, the UK only just made it in the 20th century, and only if you take a pedantic view on when that ended.

Homosexuals have never been banned from military service in Norway. Military service has been compulsory from 1814 when the constitution was written, and it requires everyone to serve. Homosexual acts were illegal until the 70s, but serve in the military you had to do none the less. If there had been such a ban, everyone would've claimed to be gay.. :p

I sort of assumed it was just a way, by the artist, to show more details on the uniform in the painting.

I've seen them worn that way in movies, too. Of course, they may not have been historically accurate, but there was quite a long period there where "practical" and "clothing" didn't seem to go together.

Shameless bump because I know Bill has been posting on the forum. You're not avoiding the issue I hope, Bill?

So DADT has well and truly ended. I'm sure Bill will be along any moment to gloat about how the US military instantly fell apart, right?

So you don't think there is a connection between DADT ending and leaving Irak and Afganistan? ;)

I think I see what you're getting at. The US was only attacking Iraq and Afghanistan because of all the homosexuality there?
