I never thought I had the RIGHT to enlist in the military. On the other hand, I always felt that the military had the RIGHT to deny me enlistment. This is just one of many reasons why DADT is not a gay rights issue.

Since the 2008 election, the far right of the Republican Party (McCain's) became dissatisfied and started a new movement calling themselves the Tea Party. One of their prominent spokespeople is, in fact, McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin. ms. O'Donnell is part of that movement.

Things become even more blurred because the Tea Party is not an actual official political party in the US on its own. What they have succeeded in this election cycle is to run candidates in the Republican primaries and win several Republican nominations for the office. So every Tea Party candidate running in the general election is officially running as a Republican. Again, this is the case for Ms. O'Donnell.

It doesn't change the relevant part for Toke, though, that while TP candidates run as Republicans, most who identify as TP are actually dissatisfied with the Republican party. It also misleads with the reference to Libertarians, which are, in fact, an official party in the US and regularly field candidates for many state and federal offices (including POTUS).

That is not my take, I always took it to be a reaction the mud Bush got on the republican brand by the hard right.
