Dawkins being sued for libel

I think the most amazing thing about this whole affair is that there is actually another person (besides the terrible director) named McG.

Clearly they should fight to the death, as the world is barely big enough for one McG.

Good luck in the case, vjohn. Not that you'll need it from the sound of things.

Thank you. It should be a fairly simple strike out. I have made it as clear as possible that I wrote what should be considered honest opinion or fair comment based on information I had researched.

That's what's great about this forum...in some cases, you can actually hear from the primaries.

I would also like to know how this turned out, and once the court proceeding are finished, hear what the nature of the comments were on this Amazon review that started all of this.

Nothing has been decided upon yet. This was a strike out application by all defendants. Judgement is expected in 2 weeks on the issues presented owing to scheduling and evidence based issues.

So, hopefully more to report in a fortnight.

Yeah I heard about that site...

Can't comment on the accuracy of course but if someone is looking for an idea of what I am in there with... :duck:

Nothing else to report yet I'm afraid. As soon as I know anything you're all on the list for me to communicate with first :D

Actually an expensive one, which is why it's so easy for the rich to do and so hard for the non-rich to defend.Hence the Libel reform campaign.

Other groups are involved, but Sense about Science is a charity that may appeal to most Brits on the forum. A fiver a month won't kill and a couple of hundred of those can achieve a lot.

It's quite easy for someone spiteful to issue libel proceedings too with little cost if they choose to represent themselves but still incur massive, and often unaffordable costs, for the defendants.

Quite often people who issue these proceedings in this way cannot afford to pay any cost orders made against them should the defendants take the logical step of sourcing legal assistance. Even then, if defendants represent themselves they still need to attend London for one or two hearings (minimum) which causes disruption, cost, inconvenience etc.

It cost, for the two day hearing in November, around £450 in total. Right before xmas which was even worse. Then add in the months and months of correspondence going back and forth, printing costs, postage.

It is the time more than anything; it is constantly in your mind. The amount of damage that it causes is often, I submit, disproportionate to the vindication that is being sought from a plaintiff.

Not only that, but as a defendant you can get libelled yourself in the most disgusting ways imaginable without recourse. It's a very shoddy state of affairs that this sort of case can cause this much hassle.

In most of the high profile cases that are reported, maybe that is the case.

Problem is, if you are genuinely libelled, like say, Chris Jefferies, the results could be devastating.

It's much easier to lose a reputation, than to build (or rebuild) one, IMO.
