Rick Perry Thinks Canada Is Not A Foreign Country

Well, Molly Ivins (how I miss that woman) called him "Goodhair" Perry, not Goodbrain.

And after all, most Americans think of Canada as honorary Americans, albeit with a weird kind of football and a habit of saying 'eh'.....

Still, if Perry by some cosmic joke should become president, I'll be looking for a job--in New Zealand. Having studied history I know we've made it through a lot of bad Presidents, but there are limits....

Perry getting elected president is the first sign of the Apocalypse

It is strange how ignorance have been elevated to a positive trait in a politician?

I think that Perry makes an intuitive, meaningful, and valid statement. And I hope never to see the day that relations between Canada and the US deteriorate to such a degree that such statements can no longer be made.

I am also a little disappointed that the preceding posters are more than happy to pretend they really believe Perry can't distinguish between the US and Canada.

Excepting the OP, of course, who never ceases to amaze, but no longer succeeds in disappointing.

“Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don’t have to buy from a foreign source,” Mr. Perry said in Clarinda, earning a loud round of enthusiastic applause."
According to treaties signed by a Mr. B. Mulroney, the USA gets first dibs on any oil pumped out of Canada, so it can hardly be considered a real foreign source.

Maybe he is just being a little smarter than we are giving credit. Both countries are part of NAFTA, so in essence the oil and the money for the oil is staying in the same economic block.

Does the candidate have a stated position on NAFTA?

I was actually thinking the same thing. What is the purpose of the Eurozone, if not to "de-foreignize" trade between the member states?

Same with NAFTA.

Does the candidate have a stated position on NAFTA?

"If we can't bust him for stupidity, maybe we can bust him for hypocrisy"?

Not really, but if he has a stated policy of support for NAFTA, then my suggestions gains strength. If he is against NAFTA then I could as easily be blowing smoke out of rectum with my suggestion

I'm not following your logic. How does first dibs make it not "a real foreign" source?

They basically have the same rights to our oil as they do to their own. If we run low on oil, we're actually not allowed to keep it for ourselves instead of selling it south.

At the peril of my very soul, I agree with theprestige. This was just a slip up of no consequence whatsoever. Everybody knows what he meant - oil money to Middle Eastern countries - but it just came out wrong. He's probably tired, is attending several events per day and is buffeted by countless political forces.

There's plenty of reasons to point at Perry and laugh; this is not one of them.

Ah, he meant good clean WHITE oil. Wonder why he didn't just say so.
