Split Thread Is communism a viable alternative economic system these days?

Economic activity is bad for the environment. There's also no unemployment under communism. Or call it socialism...whatever - anything but free market capitalism - merry Christmas to me.

Nasty capitalism destroyed the Aral Sea. Certainly communist states have had an excellent environmental record.

At least there isn't a pathological drive to create unnecessary economic activities in order to solve unemployment/poverty. Under communism when the work's done it's done - there's no need to travel the earth attempting to flog life insurance policies.

Or invading foreign countries in order to create demand for the military industrial complex's products.

Wave goodbye to personal computers, mobile phones that the average person can buy, none of which would have existed in a communist system. These are capitalist creations that exist because some capitalists realized that people might want it.

I assume you are unaware that in the 60s there were unrest in various places in the East bloc because they saw how much better off those on the western side were. It's always funny that those who complain about capitalism tend to have grown up in a capitalist society and enjoyed its fruits along the way.

Weird to start a thread objecting to political endorsement of a fiction most people don't believe, only to start advocating on page 2 the adoption by government of a different fiction that virtually nobody believes . . .

1. Research and development occurs under communism, but at a different rate and of a different type.
2. The Soviet Union was too big and poor to please the people well at that time.
3. Yes I've enjoyed years of depressing, stigmatised unemployment thanks to capitalism, .

Some say many now live in a post scarcity economy due to the advances accumulated by the capitalist system, but that few real further advances are occurring now and so it's time to switch to a communist system in order to banish the spectre of unemployment (as well as other problems brought about by that system (eg. astronomical wealth inequality)). Hardly an absurd proposition.

Perhaps a gracious mod could split the OT posts away into a new thread? Should I start one  Maybe call it "Is communism a viable alternative economic system these days?"

The same could be said for religious fundamentalism. That doesn't mean the type of research and it's speed or quality will be noticable on a human level.

Yes, I imagine it must be very difficult to run the economy if you have the worlds' biggest resources of mineral wealth, energents and lots of arable land.

Many would say this is an absurd proposition. What makes you think it isn't?

wrong on all counts

It's not an appeal to authority - a lot of people are annoyed about the wealth inequality and unemployment, as evinced by the occupy wallstreet and copy cat protests around the world. People are pissed off with capitalism in a big way. How is that an appeal to authority?

Protests are not a guide the popular opinion. The only thing protests show is who shout the loudest.

How many in Western democracies vote for parties who want to abolish capitalism?
