The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov put the United Kingdom's knickers in a right painful twist if you are to believe what you read in the Daily Mail and the comments section which is paranoia gold.

The 'facts' as stated in the article are that the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov pulled to within 30 miles of Scotland to shelter from bad weather and indulge in a bit of fly-tipping into the sea. The HMS York was scrambled to the situation.

Apparently, there have been big cutbacks in the UK's military budget, and the Admiral Kuznetsov is ten times the size of the HMS York.

I highly doubt the Russians are going to fire on the UK's ship. A fly-tip on the sly is something else again. Personally, I suspect it's a bear dropping a :rule10 in the woods.

In real ship vs ship conflict between halfway equal powers anything that isn't a submarine or is larger than a corvette is something of a liability.

Obviously the British Navy doesn't have the RAF's phone number

Russian ships have been landing at Scottish ports for generations, sometimes unannounced, occasionally military. Ullapool is often full of Russians, where the fishing fleet was a major exporter of FIAT spares for Lada Rivas. I was once assaulted by a Russian deckhand in Lerwick. His mates hauled him off rapidly, as they obviously had no visas or any legal right to be there. KGB spies usually come into Mallaig so they can catch the train south.
Nobody in Scotland gives a toss.

I don't think a bigger budget would actually make the HMS York a bigger ship.

Indeed, it's even come up in films (at least there's an American there to keep an eye on him though!)

It was good of the article to point out which ship was the carrier and which the destroyer.

If we had any entrepreneurial spirit left, we'd be out there in canoes selling them pineapples and Irn-Bru.

The've got the number, but budget cuts mean the RAF no longer has any Maritime Patrol aircraft to deal with situations like this.

Back in the day, a Nimrod would have been overhead within 5 minutes of leaving the runway at RAF Kinloss, Morayshire.

THE York had to sail all the way from the English Channel (That's at the opposite end of the islan)

Why do people read the Daily Fail, much less start threads based on their 'reporting'?

Apparently the Royal Navy are already looking at options for acquiring their own maritime patrol aircraft to be operated by the Fleet Air Arm.
