Glenn Beck's bizarre race card play

I take it we can now generalize Robert Prey's or MaGZ's behavior to be that of every conservative on the board? Is that what we're doing now?

The problem with this analysis is not the racist taunt, but that Beck defines Gingrich as a progressive. His conclusion of racism is based on a false premise. If it were true that Newt's politics were indistinguishable from Obama's, than the ardent opposition to Obama, but support for Gingrich would logically imply a racist motive.

However, since Gingrich is not a progressive, that conclusion is not supported. Are there likely some TPers that oppose Obama because of his race? Sure. Are they the majority, probably not.

And even so, Lefty didn't really claim what Brainster said--at least not in the cite Neally offered.

You're right that the premise is false, but you're wrong that if it were true, the argument would be sound. People could still choose one progressive over another for reasons other than racism.

The conclusion still wouldn't follow. In fact, I think party loyalty would explain why many people would support one progressive over another when the two belong to different parties. (And that would be so even if the two hypothetical progressive candidates didn't differ on any platform position--something not likely at all.)

At that point, does it matter?

I think so.

There were two elements to Brainster's claim: how many liberals on the JREF forum say something, and what that something is that they say.

Neally's support could have failed on just one (the point you addressed, that one or two extreme positions don't fairly characterize "liberals" or "conservatives"), but it actually failed on both points.

This should be an interesting thread. So many of the liberals around here have claimed that any opposition to Obama must be racist; will they agree with Glenn Beck?

I just wonder how long it will be until someone implies that Beck is throwing support to Romney because of... you know ;)

Yeah, get out the popcorn, this should be funny.

I agree, the potential for lulz here is quite epic :D

Since "ejecting himself" from Fox, Beck has been trying desperately to get some media attention. It is sad to see the way he now goes after Jon Stewart, hoping beyond hope that Stewart will start paying attention to him again. Beck seems to be saying more and more inflamatory things for this attention, and to hopefully get people buying his stuff, subscribing to his content, and attending his events. And one of his brands is now the term "Progressive", which he seems to have expanded to mean some kind of generic curse word, or perhaps to mean a non-endtimes-believing-Christian.

So I think Beck is loving the attention he is getting with this.

This.

Beck must be getting ready to pimp his next book

Glenn who?

Oh yeah, that talking head with the persecution complex. He's going the way of that 'Palin' gal; their 15 minutes are about up.

One person is not "so many"
Of course not, but there have been multiple posts on this board claiming the opposition to BO is largely based on racism with no such evidence and it didn't take long for leftysergeant to chime in with admitting that very thing.

and what Lefty said in this quote was not the claim that "any opposition to Obama must be racist". [ETA: That is, there is a stark logical difference between "a large part of the visceral hatred" and "any opposition".]
No, "any" or "all" and "large part" are not really significant differences to the broader point Brainster was making.

No, he said "visceral hatred", not "opposition". Frankly, I don't know too many people who have "visceral hatred" of Obama, but quite a few who have opposition.

Still, you're only talking about one member here, one that many liberals (including myself) have loudly proclaimed "does not speak for me".

Nah. Not their behavior, but I do believe they speak the thoughts that the other Conservatives actually blieve.

Oh come on. Do you really think that folks like Brainster are Jew-hating racists at their core? Really?!

*I* certainly don't!

However, I think there are many racists in the GOP, and that goes to many reasons, including Nixon's wooing of the Dixiecrats. (Nixon himself said some very antisemitic things on those tapes, BTW.)

You don't think that people that hate BO aren't opposed to him?

"Yeah, I hate that Obama, but I'm not really opposed to him..."
