Thanks to a freak wind storm leaving me without power this thread is a day late.

Oh well.

Here I want you all to nominate Stundies. Do it for baby Jesus or Chub Chub or whatever.

What is a Stundie? It's a humorous statement that is very wrong. I mean really wrong. Usually these are related to conspiracy theories but could also be about general science and logic. Keep them short and sweet if you can.

So go get them and don't forget to provide a link.

The Greatest Apollo Historian The World Has Ever Known thinks the Doppler shift measures an object's true velocity and not just its velocity in the line of sight.

Here he's talking about the Moon's orbital velocity and how it can be used for Doppler navigation.

This, after I've repeatedly told him what the Doppler shift can measure.

Now the moon does not move very fast, only 2200 miles an hour about the earth give or take. The earth rotates about its axis with any point on the equator moving at a thousand miles an hour, higher and lower latitudes move more slowly. So these are the motions generating the shifts in signal. Not great. But we know they are fast enough, generate shifts meaningful enough to be useful because shifts of this very magnitude are what were utilized to measure how fast Ranger/Surveyor/Apollo craft were moving about the moon. They moved at speeds of zero to thousands of miles an hour relative to the earth dishes tracking them, and the dishes themselves are in relative motion due to the earth's rotation.

So the objection that 2000 miles an hour is not fast enough to generate a meaningful doppler shift is not valid.

I'd like to hear him explain true speed/bearing vs relative speed/bearing

FirstClassSkeptic over at nukelies.com claims the US Army Air Corps in WW2 couldn't hit the broad side of a city:

The CEP, circular error probable, in World War II was about 3300 feet radius at 20,000 feet. Or, in other words, about a fifty percent chance of dropping Little Boy bomb on Hiroshima, much less hitting just 800 feet away from the aimed target. Plus jet stream over Japan.

Momonga at nukelies (same thread as above) should be kept at least 4 miles away from the nearest barbecue:

nuclear reaction is not necessary to create that kind of explosion. Big explosion were already acheived using 'fuel and air bomb'. Germans used them on the russian front, with 4 mile blast radius.

That statistic is actually true but CEP doesn't apply to horseshoes, hand grenades and 13 kiloton bombs.

Hiroshima is about ten miles across. How does a CEP of a 3,300 foot radius equal a 50/50 chance of landing inside a town's five mile radius?

Stundies fall like autumn leaves when Robert takes his fingers to the keyboard!

I don't think so. But why beat a dead horse? Obama has won the birther issue by putting out a highly dubious certificate debunked by numerous experts, But the public is tired of the issue, so why beat a dead horse? Fact is, Donald has repeatedly said he just doesn't know. But we do know that Obama has somehow shielded all of his academic records from public scrutiny. And he gets away with it. Why? Because he is Black? (or sort of Black, uh somewhat).

Robert Prey is a special breed. Most of the Stundie candidates have one area of focus but Robert is all over the place.

He is indeed, I now have a sweepstake on any thread he posts in, waiting for replies where he offers the following in lieu of actual answers:

1) "Only one question at a time or I wont participate,"
2) "Baloney"
3) "That is a sophomoric question, I wont waste time answering it."
4) "May a bird of paradise alight with your X"
5) "When the student is ready the teacher will appear".

Man I wish thaat teacher would hurry up, I'm tired of being lectured by the kid in the dunces cap.

Sweeney and his crew in Bockscar missed their aim point by >2.5km.

A couple of points; the 5 mile radius quoted above translates to eight kilometers (of which 2.5 km is less than a third). Second, the bomb Bockscar dropped was 21 kilotons.

The nominee went full retard and ironically, there really is no bomb big enough to knock him into half-tard territory. ;)

We have a winner! Two in fact from today:

In other words you have no idea and no interest in learning anything. When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
Yeah, well you have your rules, and I have mine. I do not answer open-ended sophomoric questions.

As for "gravity makes things fall downward," Take water, pour it on top of a solid object, and tell us whether the water will then try to flow to the side or insist on flowing downward because of gravity. If there are alternatives to a falling object other than falling downward through a lot of resistance, the object will take those alternative paths.
