Vaccines: how do I talk to my anti-vac wife about it?

I gave an example earlier from the FDA but apparently it didn't count because the patients died in 1928-ish even though that was the heyday of vaccines solving the world's worst diseases. If the CDC and the FDA etc would admit to the more recent mistakes in writing before the statute of limitations ran out, this vaccine farce would get wound up a lot quicker.

I could link to the recent Gardasil and Cervarix HPV vaccine victims but it's hard to get anyone in the industry to own up to any. Take this inadmissable anecdote from a distressed parent:

From C. Ryalls, on 15 November 2011, on http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hpv-vaccination/pages/introduction.aspx?WT.mc_id=090805

And they should count themselves lucky because their daughters didn't die almost immediately after the injection the way this poor girl did. Of course the vaccine didn't kill her! It was the massive tumor that magically appeared in her chest out of nowhere. (And we all know that massive tumors are not on the adverse event list!)

Gardasil has just as many adverse events that are not accepted as being related to the vaccine but I won't waste my typing energy listing for you guys to ignore. Just get your google engine on it if you have a caring bone in your body.
The example you gave from 1928 was due to a bacterial contamination of the vaccine. That doesn't happen now because of the exhaustive testing I have told you several times has to be carried out as a requirement. As for the HPV case, are you seriously doubting the the coroner's report that a tumour caused her death?

No I completely understood what you wrote and your argument is ridiculous as we tend to think of rose thorn scratches as being unhealthy. Perhaps it's different where you are.
It's not about being unhealthy, it's about the immune response.

Parental anecdotes do not equal causation. It is a dishonest tactic used by anti-vaxxers. That girl's tumour didn't appear magically, it was there all along and only discovered coincident with vaccine administration. How could this table have been generated if not for constant monitoring of adverse vaccine events?

Is it, though? Is it any less vague and ill-defined than 'natural'? Just about every agricultural product we have is the result of selective breeding, from fruits to grains to livestock, modified by man - are they all 'artificial'?

Under that definition, yes.

Even the moon, Mars, and Titan have been 'modified by man' - to what extent are they artificial?

They haven't been modified. There's some junk on them. So no.

If your philosophy involves distinguishing the 'natural' from the 'artificial'

It doesn't. I was setting the other poster straight.

Sorry but who are you? You're not controlling my paycheck nor do you have any influence on my life whatsoever. You may ask me as many questions as you like but I have no requirement to answer them much less answer them to your satisfaction.

Right. Which is why I intend to point all that out to everyone. You can't or won't answer simple questions. So why should people bother debating with you ?

That's seems a reverberation of the authorities saying GZ was safe.

I thought that the testing regimen of vaccines is limited so that no one would be "deprived" of its benefits.

There are undeniable examples of people eating a sandwich followed by irreversible damage.
There are undeniable examples of people walking down a street followed by irreversible damage.
Now if your example had any actual statistics backing it up and compared it to the amount of deaths/major disfigurements in people before we injected them with vaccines and then still showed up as worse, then you might have a point.

Removed breach. Cut out the name calling and personalization.
Replying to this modbox in thread will be off topic  Posted By: LashL

The point I'm making obviously relates to people whose children were developing normally, but, after vaccination/ immunisation, rapidly developed brain and other damage.
If you care to supply me with resources, comparable with those supplied e.g. the the so-called Centers for Disease Control, I'd be happy to supply statistics. Otherwise, I'd suggest you collect them yourself.
The immune system responds to the proteins present on the outside of the cell wall and has been 'programmed' from birth to ignore the protein mix present on your own cells. Cancer cells are mutants of your own cells and unless their mutation changes the proteins present there, the immune system considers them part of your own body and thus not a target.
Bacteria and viruses have a different set of proteins on their outsides and are thus targeted by the immune system. Both can avoid this by infiltrating your own cells and being out of reach. Viruses are better at this than bacteria as for most of their life cycle they exist inside your cells.
Basic immunology, which anyone who has had biology in highschool should know really.

Yes. That's what is taught, and it's what you have to say to pass exams. However, electron microscopy shows, or appears to show, that cell membranes are not in fact peppered with protein and receptor molecules; they are simply not found. Your 'basic immunology' courses have not pointed this out. There is something wrong with immunological theory.

On the actual topic of this thread, therefore, there are a number of doubts:
[1] There is a chance your child might be damaged by these procedures
[2] There's a chance they don't work properly anway
[3] There's a chance they do work, and that a disease may be diminished by them
[4] There's a chance your child might have some unusual characteristic which should affect your decision
[5] There is certainty that the official practitioners will prefer to avoid serious debate on the issue, because there are legal and financial problems with being honest.

My advice is to do some online research and judge as best you can

So, while you are the one claiming that there is a link between vaccination and delevopmental damage you cannot be bothered to actually provide any proof of that. I guess that says all that needs to be said.
At least trusetheeker, though I disagree with the content of his links or his analysis, at least seeks to convince us with actual data, unlike just shouting things and then being insulted when we do not agree.

I've actually DONE electron microscopy. Have you? And thus I know what is done to prepare a sample. Washing things in cold methanol (to start) tends to strip proteins that are not firmly anchored, and the formaldehyde often used isn't that good for protein stability either. Added to that is the fact that electron microscopy isn't really sensitive enough to detect any protein complexes smaller than a ribosome.
Do you know how proteins are generally detected using EM? The cells are first treated with *gasp* protein specific antibodies linked to gold and wherever the gold particles are found, the proteins are assumed to be. Because we know how proteins and antibodies interact.
Confocal live cell imaging with GFP-linked proteins DOES show proteins present in the cellmembrane, as does X-ray crystallography (those few times someone managed to crystallize a cell membrane.

Another method of showing the presence of proteins is differential treatment of cells with solutes.
By then precipitating the individual washing steps we know what proteins are present on the cellmembrane and how tightly they adhere.
The cellmembrane itself is highly hydrophobic and is easy to collect. Again, simple techniques allow us to easily identify the proteins present there.

Genetic information of course also helps. Extracellular and membrane proteins are generated with a specific tag that causes a ribosome to translate to the membrane and produce the protein so that it gets inserted. If the protein has large hydrophobic stretches its inserted, otherwise secreted. Though secreted proteins can of course attach to part of an inserted protein that extend trough the cellmembrane (again, easily confirmed with simple experiments any 1st year biochemist can repeat). And if you put such a tag in front of any protein it IS transferred to the membrane, wether it belongs there or not.

See, I don't need to do online research. I've done actual research in this field.
Thus my earlier question. If YOU claim that the whole of the scientific community and medical community is wrong, then YOU get to be the one proving it.

On to your points
[1] yes, but its FAR smaller than the risk of the actual diseases
[2] yes, but only in a portion of the patients so small that breathing is riskier.
[3] yes, and in fact this is so high that its actually as close to certain as anything medical gets
[4] Of course and any good hospital checks this
[5] As pointed out before, treating a disease is far more profitable than preventing it, so if this is true the pharma-medical profit would be better served by eliminating vaccination and letting those diseases run their course again.

I haven't seen any point made by you except to parrot anti-vaxx canards such as this one above. Infants are vaccinated approximately every 2 months for the first 6 months and then again at 12 months, 18 months and 24 months (depending upon recommended schedules) so you can see it is easy to correlate one profound event with another, e.g. a vaccination at 12-15 months with "brain damage" as you so crudely put it. You also seem to be ignorant of the fact that autistic behaviours are more noticeable at that time when a round of vaccines are given and no wonder that that, along with repetition confirmation has led parents to believe that their children were injured by vaccines. The rate of a severe adverse event (excluding anaphylaxis) is so low, i.e. ~1/millions of doses that investigators are unable to determine if it is coincident with the vaccine or caused by so obviously all of these anecdotal reports should be viewed with suspicion, particularly when medical records can be perused. It's rather interesting what patterns parents will opt to see, particularly with validation by online groups who have also lead themselves to believe the same.

Another "alternate science" believer I see. I'm sure you would be happy to provide evidence of this.

Your suggestion is to "do some online research"? Really? Now by doing so, what sites do you suppose will be stumbled upon? Why do lay people constantly believe they can accomplish with a bit of Google, what professional scientists and physicians take years to study and practise? It's truly arrogantly ignorant to think that you can conduct the appropriate risk/benefit analysis with the kind of "information" you seem to be using just in this discussion.

You do realise that science is not some post-modern narrative that is just someone's subjective interpretation?

It is unfortunate, but the average age of onset of autistic spectrum disorder (18 months) does coincide with one set of the jabs in the immunisation schedule.

The irony of people not having their children immunised is that the only KNOWN causes of autistic spectrum disorder are intra-uterine rubella assault on the foetus.

What is really tragic about the whole situation with Wakefield starting this global immunisation scare so he could make money is just the actual morbidity and mortality it is inflicting on children, as well as the lost time and money having to go down this rabbit hole.

It is almost as tragic as the whole 'refrigerator mother' hypothesis of autism.

Several things.

Luraak_Sisser **Therefore unless you specifically state what your vested interest is, I won't reply further to you, beyond reposting this message**
What are your vested interests? I note amid your material you have not addressed the cell surface issue. Well, you can't.

Estellea - Online research is easier than e.g. writing to academics asking questions or talking to doctors or researchers. That's why I suggest it. Many journals are online now, as you may not know, if you pay. That's why I suggest it. What makes you think I'm a 'lay person'? You're just another hack. I'm not an 'alternate science' believer. I believe in science, not the parrotings of people like you and 'Luraak_Sisser'

Tatyana, it's a presumably deliberate lie on your part to suggest events in Wakefield started the whole global 'scare'. People have been uneasy about vaccination/immunisation since it started, including for example as far back as Bismarck and A R Wallace. The AIDS fiasco - something you fail to mention - has done nothing for medical science. Flu jabs have had critics for decades.

*sigh*
I did adress the cell surface issue, you appeartanly just didnt read that part

And I'll humor you.
My vested interest is in educating people that doubt by giving the counterpoint to internet quacks advocating the 'science/medical' conspiracy.
While I will never convince you of the inaccuracy of your 'science' maybe, just maybe someone who currently is in doubt wether to vaccinate will read this debate and choose to vaccinate their children, rather than risking their exposure to all the dreadful diseases that could kill their child. And maybe my comments might play a small part in that. If that happens only once over my entire lifetime I might have saved someone's life, rather than letting the rantings and ravings of conspiracy theorists go unchallenged.

A small hope, but a hope nonetheless.

You are right, I wasn't clear.

Wakefield has started the modern vaccination scare.

The anti-vax movement started with Edward Jenner and the first small pox vaccine.

I have no idea what you are on about with the whole AIDs fiasco. Please clarify.

S/he did. What's this "vested interest" nonsense? Are you trying to imply that anyone who refutes anti-vaxx rubbish is a pharma shill?

What makes you think that anyone can pick up a journal article and apply a critical eye to it, let alone understand the content of most? If you have a specific site in mind or set of studies, then you post that, not some vacuous suggestion to "do some online research". Is that where you acquired your base of knowledge? While it may be "easier", it doesn't mean it's right; there are no short cuts in science, another failing of anti-vaxx laypeople and yes, I know you are a lay person as your posts clearly indicate. I don't see any of "us" making anything up, merely relying upon the evidence, funny that should qualify us as "hacks" by you who hasn't produced a single citation and definitely have an "alternative view" of science because the evidence doesn't suit you.

Yes there have been relatively isolated occurrences of anti-vaccine activity but Wakefield, fuelled by the media and unprecedented access to information sparked off a Western anti-vaccine phenomenon that far surpassed some "uneasiness" over vaccines. From there, loud albeit fringe groups then used thimerosal and now the "too many too soon" gambits to perpetuate some aspect of vaccines causing everything from autism to diabetes.

What makes "a soft spring water" especially pure, anyway?

Rolfe.

Well, see, "impurities" refers to things that aren't supposed to be there. Everything in spring water is, by definition, supposed to be there, so that means that it does not contain any impurities.

No, but in the same way that I believe that every death is actually due to heart failure! What led up to the tumor or the heart failure is often (but not always) discounted. I experience a lot of strange coincidences in my life but nothing ever as unlikely as that poor girl's case. Imagine having a vaccine and a completely unrelated fatal tumor burst on the same day. Whether the vaccine caused the tumor or just upset the delicate balance keeping the girl alive is possibly a minor point. The major point is the fact that she was injected without confirming that she was in good health.
