Are there hidden messages in media or am I just being psychotic?

Ok here is the hot button list words that set of the secret message buzzer in my head. I just watched the movie Hugo and while it didn't have alot of trigger words in it, it had some. Here they are; machine (in this case they fix machines), The hero was a machine in his dream. Obedience. In this case the inspector decided not to be obedient in order to give the boy a chance. The movie had alot to do with the creative aspects of machinery.

Here is a the rest list of words I heard from movies in the last few days that set off triggers.

shadow, light, authority, disobedience, machine (in the negative sense), I don't know any more from the top of my head.

Anybody else hear any loaded words in media lately?

I used to think that it was coming from me but the truth is, I think I have been bombarded with paterns since day one, so the feeling of deja vu is a false one.

Most shows depicting the future show us living in a dictatorship. Sometimes a humourous one, but mostly grim.

Most media doesn't even bother with being clever enough to hide messages, they wear their bias on there sleeve.

I dont know, I watched part of the first episode of the family guy a couple days ago. It was mostly the usual psycho talk, but the dog did mention something about the machine. Then he says I can't talk about that. On netflix when I watch some of these drama's. I see something that looks real. They don't follow up on it with the later episodes though.

Well, machine is a convenient placeholder word, so it's not surprising that you would run across it in many forms of entertainment. Also, the cliche of being ordered to do something that is immoral or unethical, and the character refusing is a cheap way to create drama. As I said, most media just isn't going to take the time or effort to hide messages, they are just going to come out and basically tell you.

That being said, if you find this stuff disturbing you so much, maybe you should talk to someone professional about it.

The writers of Family Guy can't even make their comedy subtle. What makes you think they can do so for messages of control?

You've said before in this forum that you have a condition and you are aware of it.

The evil powers don't seem to be doing a very good job of controlling the world - what do they do in countries without TV?

In a very finite number of movies, every word you know will have been said. Machine is a fairly common term. It would tend to turn up more often than antidisestablishmentarianism.

I am not a doctor but I think this may be "internal" to you and not so much "external" to the movies you are watching.

I can't help noticing that every single one of the trigger words listed in the OP appears in the OP itself. From this I can only conclude that MNBrant is sending subliminal messages.

I think you know the answer to your own question. There are no hidden messages in media. (In the way you describe. Also - when various media outlets do try to be subtle, they fail miserably. They couldn't hide a fart in an accordion factory.) But it's good that you ask yourself the question rather than assume you are correct.

Getting slightly paranoid now and then doesn't have to be a psychotic episode - sometimes our guards are down and coincidences happen. If we are temporarily vulnerable most people can start thinking in terms of patterns. Because it's a shortcut. We like shortcuts. With some cognitive effort, many people can reason themselves out of it, though and that appears to be what you are doing by starting this thread.

If, however, you know that you are vulnerable -then it is good to be paying attention to feelings like that and to get appropriate help.

"Are there hidden messages in media or am I just being psychotic?"

The latter.

If you are being serious, maybe you can explain how sneaking these insidious words into movies can result in behaviour modification.

I don't get it. What did you see in the show? I can't see where anything happened except they were using English and you think this is strange.

To answer the OP question: neither.

And both. But mostly neither.

Well the messages are not exactly hidden. In most movies you obey the light, and disobey the dark forces, but in a few its the exact opposite. I suppose that could be conditioning for something. It could also be a common fictional device I suppose.

It's a common fictional device because it stems from basic human psychology. We are generally afraid of the dark because of what it might hide.

No. Remeber rather lot of the media is rather competative and doesn't get on very well. Movies these days are designed simply to sell. There is so much risk involved in making a film these days that the risk involved in adding a political message isn't worth it unless you are Michael Moore.

In more general media there are a few PR terms around but it's not as broad as you are suggesting. "Washington" rather than goverment for example.

There are also a handful of terms that are sneaked into print as in jokes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Occult_Hand is probably the best known example.

The first episode of family guy the fat kid says way to go fight the machine! Stewie accuses, how do you know about the machine! Is that an example of an inside joke? Surely people who actually watch tv must have a few examples of inside the industry jokes. They tend to be in the pilots or first episodes.

If you see hidden messages in media, ask your doctor about schizophrenia.

Saying that shows include stuff they don't follow up on is true, but not a sign of a conspiracy. Writers drop plots and subplots for a number of reasons: Because a different direction works better, they get waylaid, somebody else takes over an long running show with a new agenda, or in the case of Lost it was made up as it went along with no plan.

Cast members of soap operas have been written out simply by no longer being mentioned, or just popping to the shops. A character has been abducted by aliens only to be never refered to again except in passing.

As for the family guy thing: Stewie builds doomsday machines. It was a joke about that.
