Occupy Wall Street better defend its identity

It's not being done exclusively to them. And they deliberately created the environment where such crimes would predictably happen, and have made it more difficult for law enforcement to protect both them and others. Why, exactly, should we simply excuse that?

That's not at all equivalent. This isn't simply about individuals who have been victimized by their own stupidity. For the most part, the victims have been made easy targets because of the callous indifference of others within the movement. Rape doesn't actually work this way, but if dressing like a slut led to other women being raped, then damn straight I'd blame a woman who dressed slutty if it caused the rape of another woman. And that's the parallel to what's going on here.

If that is the case, that the OWS camps have resulted in an increase in violent crime towards people who aren't protestors, then i'll concede the point. But all we have in this thread so far that i've seen is a bunch of anecdotes, and we can't tell for sure from these anecdotes whether or not the crimes would have occurred elsewhere. Do you have any data showing that there has been an increase in violent crime towards non-protestors in the USA since the start of these camps?

Too funny. A pro-OWS forum was held in a hall in Seattle. The local Obamavillers showed up and changed hearts and minds:

"I walked in supportive and left unsupportive," said 69-year-old Mary Ann, who declined to provide her last name. "I’m turned off by the negative shouts, repetition, and all I can think about is a cult. And I believe in every one of their damn principles."

Read it all; it's a hoot!

Dodson, however, politely explained that labor unions are part and parcel with the Occupy movement's push for economic reform. "I like to consider myself a union activist, not a union bureaucrat," she said. "This is labor’s fight, this is our fight."

Whatever further insight the speakers planned for the 90-minute event was then cut short when the woman ran on stage. Activists had planned to interrupt the panel because, some said, they opposed the power dynamic created by speakers on stage talking into microphones.

Help! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!

A supporter of the Occupy movement reports on a child prostitution ring at Occupy Portland:

A woman from Portland reported that some, very closed tents in Portland were locations where crystal meth and black tar heroin were dealt and distributed, and that a child prostitution ring had also set up shop in Occupy Portland. Having been an urban pioneer in Portland myself some years ago, living in a studio aparment near the encampment area, I certainly believe this to be true.

and you believe this?
this is a slanderous statement in an opinion piece, with zero evidence.
wow.
if i posted this, i would be flayed for it by the usual group of right wing whackos.
wanna bet they come to your defense?

Add slander to the long list of things you don't understand.

Yes, I believe it. It's an admission against self-interest. This guy is clearly an OWS supporter based on the rest of the stuff he says in his post. And yet he finds the claims of a child prostitution ring credible. We know for a fact that some of the other charges are absolutely true; heroin being distributed in the park? Well, there was the little matter of something like four overdoses being reported in the encampment.

It may not have evidence, but it's only slanderous if it's not true, and you don't know that it's not true any more than I know it is true.

If you posted it, you would be lying, wouldn't you?

In this photo essay at oregonlive, you can see some of the spent needles left behind not to mention the complete mess that our parks were left in.

Hey, what do you know? Turns out that the people handcuffed inside a barrel wasn't a hoax after all.

Liz Nichols, 20, originally from Arkansas but who came to Occupy Portland from Seattle, was the last protestor to be cleared from the downtown parks. Her right arm, handcuffed inside a plastic barrel filled with some solid, has to be sawed free by Portland Police in Terry Schrunk Plaza.Faith Cathcart/The Oregonian

That you seem perfectly happy to accept every bit of "news" from blogs, fringe sites or opinion pieces if they happen to suit your world view. Why do you then complain when other people do the same?

by far, most of the articles i link to have footnotes, with source references.
those are sadly lacking in the post i criticised.

If you are looking for a dramatic change in the status quo, enlist the support of other countries, arm up heavily, and overthrow the government.

I.e. violence. So then it would seem the only way to affect significant reform to the system would require methods that would garner "no sympathy" here, right? In which case, a movement that you'd be "sympathetic" to would also be an ineffective one, and so then what would be the point of it?

(Or is it that the things you don't like are essentially pointless petty crime? E.g. a rape, which does no good at all.)
