Well it appears that Russell Pearce, AZ state senate president and "author" of SB1070 the racist anti immigrant bill, has been recalled!

The victor being a more moderate republican named Jerry Lewis. This is awesome for the simple fact that it was his own conservative district that gave him the order to ship out. Despite receiving money from 40 other states his own constituents said, "enough!"

I put author in quotes because it was actually written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) a lobby group representing the private prison industry in this case.

The winner had this to say,

"Obviously, it was a huge part of the recall," said Lewis, who promised a more "civil dialogue and discussion" of the entire immigration issue.

In other news Phoenix elected a democrat to the mayors office yesterday. Between this and the news from Ohio and Mississippi its a good day for America.
 
Just imagine how much Lewis would have won by if the election were held in France.
 
There was nothing "racist" or in any way improper about the Arizona bill. It is the duty of government at ALL levels to enforce the laws. The bill simply would have given the state more "teeth" with which to do so.

Actually it is racist and thats why the courts have stopped those racist provisions that step on federal power. The notion that ALL levels of government are to enforce ALL laws is just silly. There are divisions of responsibility some given to the states and some to the federal government. Unless you think Arizona should be regulating interstate commerce between Oregon and Washington? Do you think boarder patrol works the state of Arizona or the U.S. Government?

ETA: Further more it isn't even in the interest of the citizens of AZ it was written by a lobbying group to help fill the coffers of the private prison industry. Regardless of your opinion of SB1070 being racist you have to acknowledge that as a means of ending illegal immigration it is completely useless. Its purpose is to make the private prison companies more money.

When I turned on the radio this morning I got the following news

1. Mississippi voters rejected the anti abortion bill

2. Ohio voters rejected the anti union bill

3. Pearce was recalled

Needless to say there was a great deal of fist pumping. Made my week!

Yeah, I'm kinda beside myself. I'm not used to feeling optimistic after an election...

It was written by a lobbying group that would gain a lot of slave labor maintianed at state expense.

And Pearce is a racist scum bag who attends white nationalist rallies. He is not a good American at all. Good riddance to worthless garbage.
 
Michigan has rebelled and gotten rid of the idiot who chair the state House Education Committee. Score another one for the unions.

The GOPhad better forget about making any more idiotic claims of having some kind of mandate from the people to enact all these stupid right-wing, ALEC-written measures.

The poor babies will have to start entertaining thoughts that were not implanted in their mud-filled heads my the Koch roaches. I can smell the myelin burning already.

The link to our local paper describes a proposal to hold open primaries, but then choose the top two winners to run against each other. What happened to Pearce is exactly as he called it - he would have a lot of difficulty winning if he faced a moderate opponent and needed the votes of moderates to win. As it was, he won the Republican primary and in a heavy Republican district he could not lose.

Pearce is a tea party extremist who won his party's primary, and then ruled as if he did not need to give a second thought to the moderates of his district. The recall showed the peril of that kind of 'to the victor goes the spoils' thinking.

But... why not change the election process so we get this kind of choice in the first place? With this change, a heavily Republican district like Mesa would choose between the top two winners of an open primary. Sure they might be both Republican, but would they both be so extreme? It seems to me that the drift would be more toward the center that we are sorely missing right now. There are a lot of Democrats in Mesa who would probably vote for a more centrist candidate.

If the 'top two' proposal comes up on a ballot I might just vote for it.
