Here’s a thread for speculation on who benefited from the Herman Cain exposé. I don’t think it was the Romney campaign since Cain was never perceived to be any real electoral threat. Also if Cain’s support were to go to the other candidates little would go Romney’s way.

So who benefits from Cain’s electoral demise?

If it's supposed to be about who benefits, change the thread title.

Suggesting that someone who benefits from it was responsible for the leak (and by this I presume you mean the sexual harassment allegations) is disingenuous.

Anyhow, playing along....

Assuming that Cain could get the GOP nomination and assuming that this means that there is a chance he could become President, I would say that the people who have the most to gain are the whole US population.

So I guess *everyone* leaked the Herman Cain exposé to the press.

Ooooh, oooooh, I know, I know. . .

Da Joooz!

Actually, since Cain´s nomination would virtually guarantee that Obama is re-elected, leaking the exposé makes it more likely that Obama is not re-elected.

Hence, the Nazi fanboys and White Supremacists benefit most, since they want the unpalatable (to them) situation of having a black man in the White House to end.

And, surely, if there is some nefarious purpose behind the leak, the timing is very wrong. For best effect the nefarious leakers should have waited to the last two weeks before the federal election for "best" effect.

It's "obviously" his supporters who are leaking the information now so that the issue can safely be forgotten by the electorate; given that their attention span is measured in weeks.

The Jews.

Ask the woman who said she was part of the suit...

I suspect that the alleger (that is the alleged victim of sexual harassment) "leaked" it to the press as an anonymous source. It was undoubtedly a violation of the gag order that was part of the settlement, but if the press refuses to disclose their source, it's a moot point.

It could also have been someone else from the National Restaurant Association, since there has to be records of the settlement.

You've discounted Romney.
Have to discount Obama, because that would make him a shoo-in.
The Jews are too obvious.
Michelle Bachmann would have screwed it up somehow.
Rick Perry is a possiblity as Cain's support might come his way.
Could be Hillary, because she want's Obama to lose so she can rescue the country in 2016.

The answer is:
The Jews - They're never too obvious an answer.

I thought y'all were skeptics? And maybe wait at least 24 hours before you allow anecdotes to tickle your confirmation bias?

Carry on.

Confirmation bias about what? Are you saying that there was no allegation of sexual harassment, and no settlement deal with the National Restaurant Association?

Or are you leaping to the conclusion that we accept every allegation of sexual harassment as being true?

At any rate, my position on Cain remains that I am much more concerned with his weird policy proposals than I am with settled sexual harassment allegations.

Nope; facts still to be aired though.

Yes, when it involves black conservatives.

Agreed.

I doubt he'll be the nominee.

Ah, so then the confirmation bias is your own. [ETA: This thread is an invitation for speculation on who leaked the story of the allegations and settlement to the press; not about the credibility of the unspecified allegations.]

The lack of any evidence that people here believe the allegations are true (except that there were allegations and the NRA settled them in a cash deal that included a gag order) points to the opposite conclusion.

Facts about what? About who leaked this story to the press?

According to the stories (including Cain now) the settlement agreement included a gag order, so the allegations themselves will not likely get aired.

Perhaps some scrutiny will be given these newer allegations (the ones Scrut observes to be coming out of the woodwork), unless they too were all previously settled with a gag order in place.

ETA: And I think "gag order" is a bit of a misnomer. There was no ordering. These were the terms of a settlement agreement, negotiated and agreed to by both parties.

I don't know if you forgot to reset your sun dial but it's been well more than 24 hours since the story broke.

Poor schlub was running so he could sell some books and found himself inexplicably in the lead. He knew of this settlement. No way he didn't know it was going to come back to bite him in the butt.

As to "whodunnit".... I can't see the motive for either the Dems or for the usual likely suspect (think "Bush 2016" - Klever Karl). Obama would've loved to have run against Herman. He could probably pay down the national debt with his campaign slush fund because he wouldn't have had to spend a dime. The Bushies liked having Herman in front - it assured them of a loss so that Jeb can become the party saviour in 2016 and more important, he was hurting Perry more than anyone and the Bush clan does not like Rick.

Ergo - Perry's the likely benefactor but the convenient fact that one of his aides has also reconfirmed the story from personal experience (but, no, he wouldn't use it for political gain, he just came forward because he's a concerned citizen) tends to muddy the situation. If they'd leaked the original story, Perry's people would be staying as far away from it as possible - just let it run its course.

The real fun will be watching the Generic GOP Poster Team here running around in circles for a few days to see which blob of pablum is the next front-runner who they have to start justifying support of (and liberal hatred of). It must be hard trying to get that internet support team in gear after they've stripped the transmission and removed the entire drive train four separate times, now.
