But this is exactly the point when comparing: You must extrapolate both sides. My phone camera is better than the first digital I ever used (I didn't own it), and at some point phone cameras are likely to be better than the digital I own now, but ... at that time the dedicated cameras will also have progressed.

Of course, it happens sometimes that a gap is closed and one device is simply caught up with, after which it will probably fade away. That is what happened to workstation computers a decade ago, and it just might happen to compact cameras. Not there just now, IMHO, but time will show...

Totally agree. Dedicated point and click cameras probably have some time left before they are subsumed into our "mobile phone" as PDAs were because of the physics of bending light requiring, but we are clever monkeys and we do keep finding ways of cheating.
