It's a sad day for democracy when a tax we didn't get a chance to vote on...
I'm sure there have been taxes that have been passed by previous governments where the people didn't "get a chance to vote on" as you put it. It doesn't mean that it's a sad day for democracy, more that you don't seem to understand how our system of government works.
...one that is unwanted by the majority of the population, is imposed by a government that categorically promised they wouldn't.
Do you have any evidence that they made this promise at any other point that wasn't basically at the last minute?
