Continuation Part 3 - Discussion of the Amanda Knox case

Its a bit late to go over the evidence any more as they've finally let the kids go, however it would be nice to read peoples thoughts about the polizia motivations behind this case and the tragic/disgraceful route it has taken?

Did they purse AK n RS because they thought they were guilty? Or did they do it despite knowing they were innocent just to save face? Or any other reason?

Hello 'Rolfe' :D

I believe the Perugian coppers liked the weird American girl for this crime from the very start, perhaps believing at first that she must have known the killer. This is evident from the extensive wiretaps and the increasing pressure brought to bear on her before her arrest. When she 'wiggled her hips' and broke down at the sight of knives during the second crime scene tour they further theorized that she was directly involved in the attack. In my view it was a deadly cycle of confirmation bias.

If you go back and look at the 2007 news coverage you can see the gears turning. Early reports state police are looking for a single male attacker, possibly known to Meredith. A couple days later they're theorizing about a male or female attacker. And finally, shortly before Amanda's arrest, there are rumors of multiple attackers.

What I'm really curious about is why it took them over two weeks to identify Rudy Guede. They had the palm print. They had asked Meredith's friends to describe any men she might have come into contact with in the days and weeks leading up to her murder. Amanda, in her final statement, said she'd described Rudy to investigators though she hadn't remembered his name.

Why were the police expending so much energy on wiretaps when they had a critical piece of forensic evidence in their hands and a list of associates to track down?

Does anyone know what time Amanda and her family are due to arrive in Seattle, and what time their press conference is?

Barbie Neadeau's live "chat":

Quote:
Mops, buckets, rocks, receipts are all circumstantial evidence, and it seems very much so to this appellate panel. The first court considered these elements crucial. The second court clearly did not.

LOL. This is a person who claimed the bleach receipt in her book, IIRC.

Funny that Barbarella - I hadn't realised that the first court had considered 'mops', 'buckets' and 'receipts' to be crucial - a smack on my wrist for thinking the court discarded that 'evidence'.

They are due to land at around 5.10pm local time, I think (which is in around 85 minutes from now), and I believe a press conference is planned to take place at the airport at 5.45pm (clearly they have better faith in SeaTac's baggage reclaim system than I have in Heathrow's!)

The crew of the supertanker will be handling their luggage. They will driven to their secret destination surrounded by state patrol vehicles in special SUVs supplied by Marriott.

Oh mannnnnnnnnn. I see that Yummi is now trying to backtrack and convince himself that "maybe" Hellmann's acquittals were of the 530.2 variety rather than the 530.1 variety.

May I state, for the record, once more, that they were definitely of the 530.1 variety. That is explicitly clear from the precise and unequivocal wording used in the acquittal statement. If a judge uses phrases such as "because the accused did not commit the crimes" or "because the crimes did not take place" in regard to acquittals (as Hellmann did last night), it is axiomatic that the acquittals were under 530.1 rather than 530.2. There is nothing more to be said on the matter. It is a total certainty.

(For those who might still be unsure what "530.1" and "530.2" refer to, they refer to a specific article of the Italian Criminal Code (Article 530) which deals with acquittals. Paragraph one of the article (i.e. 530.1) is where the acquittals are because the court concludes that the accused did not commit the crime (or because the court concluded that the alleged crime did not even take place), while paragraph 2 (i.e. 530.2) is where the court concludes that there is insufficient evidence to find the accused guilty (but that there is still a possibility that the accused committed the crime)).

I hope those SUVs are armour-plated and mine-proofed: according to certain pro-guilt commentators, half of Seattle is ready to lynch Amanda Knox on sight....

I have to say that I find extreme distaste in the raft of comments from certain unusually-unpleasant pro-guilt commentators that Knox and her family will find their lives to be a virtual living hell from here on. Some of the nastiest individuals are even actually hoping that this will be the case. Well, as the old saying goes: the best revenge is living well. I hope that Knox and her family (and Sollecito and his family) can quickly settle down to normal, happy, peaceful lives. And I hope that certain pro-guilt commentators might find the humanity to have some shame for what they have written.

you can follow Amanda's plane right here http://planefinder.net/flight/BAW49

just to give you a picture she's flying 1st class in a cordoned off section to herself. Someone's paid big money for this.

You don't give up easily, do you? In fact, reports say that she and her family/friends are in Club World (i.e. business class) on the upper deck of the 747-400. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if BA had bumped up the entire entourage to Club World as a combination of a kind gesture, a PR opportunity, and a realisation that privacy on the 10-hour flight would be paramount to Knox and her family/friends. It's already been reported that there are several enterprising journalists who managed to get themselves tickets on the same flight, and BA probably felt it appropriate to allow Knox and her family/friends some separation from the hacks (and probably also from any interjections from other passengers).

Didn't Clouseau claim in her webchat farce today - in response to the fact that no bleach receipts ever existed - that she had seen "receipts" in the "10,000-page case file", but weaseled that she hadn't said they were for bleach? If that's the case, then the only other real receipts that I can remember were for pizza - and they had no bearing whatsoever on the case against Knox and Sollecito.

That whole webchat thing is a most curious dynamic: the person in the hotseat (in this case Clouseau) seemingly gets the choice of which questions to answer and which to ignore. And of course there can never be any comeback from the person who asked the question in the first place, meaning that the person in the hot seat can basically give meaningless, misleading or mendacious answers with little chance of being taken to task. Nadeau seemingly engaged in such behaviour throughout today's proceedings. Very poor display. Fortunately, she will now slowly slide out of view as her work is exposed as shoddy, ignorant and biased. Bye Bye Barbie!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people here who were so dedicated and did such an amazing job of supplying crucial information. I would obviously like to thank Frank Sfarzo for the unbelieveable effort he put into all this.
I wish God's blessing and comfort to the Kerchers and also AK & RS and their families.

I heard a bidding war broke out for the all important first interview. Its more likely the winner picked up the tab for this. I dont grudge them it at all, you wouldn't want 300 people staring at you for 8 hours.

Stop being so sensitive about any comment lol

SomeExperts

From Barbie Neadeau's live "chat", a couple of her comments:

There are mixed genetic traces in spots of blood in which Amanda's traces are higher than Meredith's. That implies mixed blood according to the dozens of forensics experts I've interviewed about this. Who have you interviewed?

Dozens, really? Cite?

RoseMontague,

She is completely wrong, and I am skeptical about her claim of dozens. Why would you need to speak to dozens to clarify this point, and which article or textbook are these putative experts using to reach their opinion? There never was any mixed blood.

Not to mention the comfort for the vast majority of passengers whose greatest interest is a relaxed flight of their own. Upper deck Club World on a BA 747-400 only has 20 seats.

BA0049 is scheduled to arrive at: 17:12 Local time Tuesday 04 Oct 2011. It is a few minutes late.

Guede wants a new trial. That's a riot.

I just thought of something, maybe he should get one? If Italy has no double-jeopardy protections, perhaps re-trying him might garner him the sentence he deserves?

The Kerchers are not happy that only one person killed their daughter. Why? Is it too ordinary to be the first victim of a serial killer type? Or are they disappointed that the killer is black.

This might have something to do with having to face up to the fact had Maresca not have refused to contest the mitigation that Rudy didn't act alone, Rudy Guede would have gotten a longer sentence.

The Supreme Court said that multiple killers were involved, therefore everything about the conviction is incorrect? Seems to me the SC put their collective feet in their mouth.

They couldn't really conclude that it was only one attacker with another court case going through the system against two others for the same crime, that would have put their leg up to their ass into their collective mouths. I'm with LJ, this is meaningless, just another example of the mendacity of Maresca and Mignini who were the ones pushing this absurd fallacy.

You mean we should ignore you when you state outright falsehoods, like that they're flying first class when they're not?

Purely coincidentally, National Geographic TV in the UK is currently running the premiere of its "Seconds from Disaster" programme about the Cavalese cable car disaster. As a quick recap, it took place in 1998, and was where a US Marines aircraft that was flying too low and too fast sliced through the main cable of a tourist cable car in northern Italy, killing all 20 people in the cable car gondola which plummeted around 100m to the ground.

There was genuine outrage felt across Italy - and vehement anti-American sentiment - when US military courts acquitted the two pilots of any criminal conduct related to the disaster in 1999. There was widespread (and justified) opinion that there was a cover-up and a skewed justice process (the jury in the trial consisted almost entirely of other US Marine pilots, some of whom were contemporaries and direct colleagues of the accused pilots).

It's generally agreed that this disaster has had a long-term detrimental impact on relationships between Italy and the US. Whether it played any subliminal part in the prosecutorial zeal against Knox is impossible to gauge of course, and nor is it possible to gauge whether it influenced public opinion in Italy against Knox. But it is certainly something that deserves to be recognised and considered when one is examining the wider context of events in Perugia between November 2nd 2007 and now.

I noticed that Maundy Gregory has a new article up at TJMK. He finally takes the gloves off and reveals his true colors. More PR machine nonsense:

And at least you know, next time you kill someone, to think about who is going to do your PR before you think about who your lawyer is going to be.

Hopefully, LJ won't mind me replying on this - I don't think it's a case of being over-sensitive - more like a case of rectifying any misunderstandings by readers when someone posts lies/misinformation, either through sheer ignorance or simple snarkiness. The 'winner' won't have picked up the tab as the Knox family have made it abundantly clear that Amanda and the family want some privacy before considering matters such as you allude to.

I also do not feel that it reflects well on a person when they post snarky comments in other parts of the forum in other threads, poking fun at posters in this thread. It's not clever but it certainly gives good indication to character. To then come on this thread and pretend to be an innocent bystander would certainly be disingenuous IMHO.

Ah well...
