Oh dear evil Jebus on a chariot-driven sidecar... I thought Rick Perry was nuts, but I didn't realize he was THIS nuts. Yikes! :jaw-dropp

Rick Perry's Army of God
The movement is called the New Apostolic Reformation. Believers fashion themselves modern-day prophets and apostles. They have taken Pentecostalism, with its emphasis on ecstatic worship and the supernatural, and given it an adrenaline shot.

The movement’s top prophets and apostles believe they have a direct line to God. Through them, they say, He communicates specific instructions and warnings. When mankind fails to heed the prophecies, the results can be catastrophic: earthquakes in Japan, terrorist attacks in New York, and economic collapse. On the other hand, they believe their God-given decrees have ended mad cow disease in Germany and produced rain in drought-stricken Texas. ...

... what makes the New Apostolic Reformation movement so potent is its growing fascination with infiltrating politics and government. The new prophets and apostles believe Christians—certain Christians—are destined to not just take “dominion” over government, but stealthily climb to the commanding heights of what they term the “Seven Mountains” of society, including the media and the arts and entertainment world. They believe they’re intended to lord over it all. As a first step, they’re leading an “army of God” to commandeer civilian government. ...

Whoa - so Rick Perry is now some kind of religious prophet to these people? One who has a direct line to God, like the Pope?!!

ZOMFSM, what the hell is going on? :boggled:

And strangely enough, when I read about the GOP candidates in the news, Perry is portrayed as being among the least nutty of them!

Has anyone emailed Colbert yet?

In Rick Perry, they may have found their vessel. And the interest appears to be mutual.

I gotta say they are certainly shopping smart. S Mart.

I was just reading about his cozy relations with a number of Dominionist types; those are the folks that want a Christian Nation, writ large.

Link to the actual Texas Observer article, and not a snippet on another website. Although it's telling me that the live page is currently offline, a snapshot is up thanks to CloudFlare's Always Online. Might want to take a screen shot before the article poofs.

Looks like Perry hasn't actually thrown in with them yet, and still has plenty of wiggle room to slither away if the heat comes their way.

Religion works. So shut up and let the Repubs have their god moment.

And GOD told me to tell you to be a Republican and vote for Rick Perry.

I also did a Google search for the article and chose the cached version of the article. It seems the only version available is the text-only version - Link

ETA: Actually, I was able to get the CloudFlare Always Online version as well. Will be posting it to FB soon :)

That Perry was courting the evangelical Christians in the GOP, no.

That he was literally setting himself up as some kind of prophet, yes.

Come to Jeeesus!

Yes, Perry.

As far as I can guess anyway, the election strategy is going to go a bit like Survivor:
Defeat the strong or more competitive ones early.
Encourage the idiots to be more so, and also persevere.
Face the weakest opponent you can at the end.

I think the Democrats would be delighted to face Perry.
