I am actually a no-planer, so as far as I am concerned the hijackers are nothing more than red herrings, whose role it was to loudly prance around the States in early 2001, taking flight simulator courses (but emphatically saying they didn't want to learn how to take off or land), leaving Korans in strip clubs and other harmless but attention seeking pranks.
However, I realise most JREFers profess in the Arabs hiding in caves hypothesis, as such I would be interested to know what they think of claims by Richard Clarke that the CIA knew about the hijackers in the USA and even tried to recruit them

True or woo?

Clarke’s theory addresses a central, enduring mystery about the 9/11 attacks— why the CIA failed for so long to tell the White House and senior officials at the FBI that the agency was aware that two Al Qaeda terrorists had arrived in the United States in January 2000, just days after attending a terrorist summit meeting in Malaysia that the CIA had secretly monitored.
