To me this is not a very good argument. It could have been done at night, there are many options. If the security was involved (and I mean the upper echelon of the security) it could be done. Also it's not like when someone is doing maintenance everyone gives a close up inspection.

And what of the spear carriers that planted the devices?

The logistics of moving the devices to the site?

The production of the devices themselves?

Everyone along the way must be a conspirator, or be gone on 9/12/01 in order for the conspiracy to remain secret.

These people would've taken months to rig the building in this unprecedented method of demolition stealthily, which still means an extremely good chance the half-million people passing through the building daily would find something on any given day. As more and more thermite/explosives are planted and time goes on, the cumulative odds of discovery go up exponentially from an already high number. These hypothetical masterminds aren't going to rely on the extremely slim chance that they won't be discovered.
