* how was that determined?

- it wasn't

* how does that then indicate that it was steel?

* because it was steel and no testing was done so that no one would be able to know for certain that it was steel. Terefore it was steel.

Which comes back to the question then, 'How did Robertson come to know that the molten metal was steel?' By what method?

What constituted a "little river"? A steady drip? a 1 cm wide flow? a 25 cm wide flow? a 5 meter wide flow?

Sadly no, what he is saying is he can recognize that he being a non expert cannot just determine whatever from unsupported opinions.
