Superconductivity at room temperature??

You cannot start off with what you have to prove. I have asked that you must prove that a current, consisting of free charge-carriers, can flow from an injection contact to a target contact while also cancelling the applied electric field between the contacts, so that E must be zero. Assuming as your starting hypothesis that the field is zero is thus nonsensical.
If a physically impossible assumption is used as a starting hypothesis, and plugged into Maxwell's equations, and Ben finds "no contradictions", it does not prove that the assumption is physically possible.

In your last post, you asked for a solution to Maxwell's equations that shows this is possible. ben gave you one, and now you reject it. What a surprise.

The only way TO PROVE THAT IT IS, is to solve Maxwell's equations after having plugged in this assumption, AND SOLVE THEM SUBJECT TO THE ACTUAL PREVAILING BOUNDARY CONDITIONS: You will then find contradictions.

No, you won't. The boundary conditions in ben's solution are exactly those you specified (applied external field plus current).

His solution is perfectly valid, it it quite obviously describes what would happen. Unless the applied electric field is absolutely enormous, there are plenty of charge carriers in an ordinary conductor to cancel the applied field (by forming sheets of charge on the top and bottom surfaces of the conductor) and also to carry a current through the material.

This is basic, first-semester E&M - you can find examples like this in any introductory text. It would also be trivial to verify experimentally.

What fascinates me is how you are able to espouse incorrect physics so fluently and with such self-confidence.

One thing that interests me - and I suspect the other posters in this thread - is how accurately you reflect our views of you. You claim to feel about us precisely as you know we feel about you. It's an example of a form of psychological projection, which I've also observed in several other quacks posting on this forum.

Rational person A, believing person B to be insane but learning that person B believes A is insane, would pause and wonder whether B might be right. In our case, everyone in this thread agrees that you are nuts. You, on the other hand, believe that not only are we all wrong, but so is nearly every physicist for the last 80 years or more.

As I've told you before - if you believe everyone else is insane, it is you that are insane.

OK, let's start with initial condictions in which the E field is nonzero inside the slab. That also satisfies Maxwell's Equations, but now there is a force on the free charge carriers in the slab. The force accelerates the charge carriers (whatever they are) in the z-direction, but they can't go any further than z=0 or z=a. By charge conservation, then, if the sheets of excess charge did not exist to begin with, they form due to the electric forces. It is easy to show that the solution I originally quoted (E=0 in the slab) is the unique equilibrium solution, and that it's arrived at after a finite time.

If a physically impossible assumption is used as a starting hypothesis, and plugged into Maxwell's equations, and Ben finds "no contradictions", it does not prove that the assumption is physically possible.

That may be true in some fields of physics, but thanks to the uniqueness theorem of Laplace's Equation, electromagnetism is not one of them. If you guess at a solution, and it fits the boundary conditions, then it IS the solution you would have found if you had done it the other way around.

Even if such "sheets" do form from the pool of free-charges within the material, the densities of opposite charges within these sheets can NEVER accumulate to a high-enough level so that they can actually cancel an applied electric-field between them

Utter baloney. Where did you get that idea? In my slab geometry, you need an excess of 10^8 electron charges per square meter to cancel an electric field of one volt per meter. I leave it to you to work out the density of mobile charge carriers in typical conductive materials.

I just want to point out that Johan's claim here is exactly of the form Zig identified a few posts ago:

You tried grabbing onto the nearest idea that might prove me wrong, and didn't actually care to figure out if it made sense. But it doesn't. You only believe it's right because you're convinced I must be wrong, and can't think of any other reason why I might be.

In your last post, you asked for a solution to Maxwell's equations that shows this is possible. ben gave you one, and now you reject it.
I have always rejected claptrap physics.
What a surprise.
Why are you surprised when I reject claptrap?
No, you won't. The boundary conditions in ben's solution are exactly those you specified (applied external field plus current).
No they are NOT. Only an incompetent who does not know elementary electrical circuit theory will reason like Ben and you do.
His solution is perfectly valid, it it quite obviously describes what would happen.
Sorry to pluck you out of your cosy ignorance, but the derivation is physically impossible since it TOTALLY ignores the boundary conditions that I have specified.

Any primary school infant knows that the equilibrium current along a circuit is determined by the TOTAL resistance of the WHOLE circuit divided by the EMF. Thus even if the resistivity within one of the elements is zero, the current flowing through it will still NOT CHANGE WITH TIME. Thus even though there is a NON-ZERO electric-field E(x) at every point x within the element without resistivity, the current density J(x) at that point remains constant: i.e. if D denotes partial differentiation, one has that (D/Dt)J(x) remains identically zero. Only an incompetent will state the opposite which can only be true when both the battery and the circuit elements outside the element with zero resistivity; all also have zero resistivity. Makes you think hey! The London brothers made an infantile mistake and NOT A SINGLE “expert” on superconduction picked it up for more than 70 years.
Unless the applied electric field is absolutely enormous, there are plenty of charge carriers in an ordinary conductor to cancel the applied field
All free charges will be accelerated and will thus form part of the current: It is simple infantile physics that J(x)=Nqv(x) where N is the density of ALL the free charge-carriers, q is the charge, and v(x) is the speed of the charge-carriers at the point x.
(by forming sheets of charge on the top and bottom surfaces of the conductor) and also to carry a current through the material.
Why will they form sheets of charge on the top and bottom surfaces while the electric field is parallel to the surfaces? Please TRY and think logically.
This is basic, first-semester E&M - you can find examples like this in any introductory text. It would also be trivial to verify experimentally.
This is the advice you need: Have you EVER read such a book? I seriously doubt that you have.

Yes I have also observed it and the most obvious quacks have been you, Ben m, Ziggurat, and Reality Check.
Rational person A, believing person B to be insane but learning that person B believes A is insane, would pause and wonder whether B might be right.
Exactly! So why do you not pause and think?
In our case, everyone in this thread agrees that you are nuts.
Churchill stated that the majority is usually wrong. And this is what I have also found in my life. To be part of a mediocre majority provides security. It always amazed me that it can be stated that “In the land of the blind, One-eye is king”. This is never so since the blind majority will crucify One-eye since they cannot also see what he is seeing. The same with the little boy who claimed: “The Emperor is naked”. He was probably locked up as being insane.
You, on the other hand, believe that not only are we all wrong, but so is nearly every physicist for the last 80 years or more.
And you claim that this is impossible since the majority of blind people must be right. Although it seems improbable that physicists could have preached incorrect physics, it is not impossible. Anything that is probable, no matter how small the probability, can happen; and probably will happen at some stage; as it has happenned sionce 1927.
As I've told you before - if you believe everyone else is insane, it is you that are insane.
Why must it be me? Just look at the insane argument that Ben just gave and which you are defending. It seems to me clear cut who is really insane.

While a current is injected at z=0 and flows out a z=a, they can go further
By charge conservation, then, if the sheets of excess charge did not exist to begin with, they form due to the electric forces.
Only when charge-carriers are NOT injected at z=0 and do NOT leave at z=a.
It is easy to show that the solution I originally quoted (E=0 in the slab) is the unique equilibrium solution, and that it's arrived at after a finite time.
It is not the unique solution for an element with zero resistivity which forms part of a circuit which has also other elements with resistivity. In fact it is TOTALLY impossible under these boundary conditions for the electric field to become zero within any element with free charge-carriers even when this element has ZERO resistivity.
That may be true in some fields of physics, but thanks to the uniqueness theorem of Laplace's Equation, electromagnetism is not one of them. If you guess at a solution, and it fits the boundary conditions, then it IS the solution you would have found if you had done it the other way around.
But if you guess a solution which does not fit the actual boundary conditions, as you have done, then the solution derived (even if it is a unique solution according to Laplace) is still physics claptrap.
Utter baloney. Where did you get that idea? In my slab geometry, you need an excess of 10^8 electron charges per square meter to cancel an electric field of one volt per meter. I leave it to you to work out the density of mobile charge carriers in typical conductive materials.
You are spouting the BALONEY: Since you claim that free charges can accumulate at the contacts notwithstanding the fact that charges are moving through one contact into your slab, and moving out of the other contact out of your slab. The only charges that can accumulate at a contact interface are those that become trapped owing to an initial offset in Fermi-levels within the contact material and the slab, before the contacts have been made. Since they form a dipole across the interface they do not form a polarisation field within the material itself which can cancel the applied electric-field: EVEN WHEN THE SLAB HAS ZERO RESISTIVITY.

I just want to point out that Johan's claim here is exactly of the form Zig identified a few posts ago:
It only proves that both you and Ziggurat are too incompetent to understand and apply elementary physics.

This is of course another blatant lie by you: We have specifically talked about the onset of a current when switching on the voltage across a superconducting magnet; and specifically your claim that there must be free charge-carriers since it requires them to start flowing everywhere within the superconducting wire as soon as they experience the electric-field caused by the voltage. In other words we were discusiing the stage BEFORE equilibrium current flow established itself. It is during this transient stage that you also get displacement currents.

errrrm because in the example given it's the person who thinks he is right but who everyone else thinks is wrong may want to reconsider......and that would be you.
I ALWAYS consider the possibility that I might be wrong. This should be the normal route for any sane person; even when he/she is part of the majority that think they are right. It is the really insane person who believes that he/she is right just because the majority agrees with him/her.

Such insane persons have always been responsible for lynching innocent people. There is only one way to determine whether a person is really right or wrong, and this is to consider all the RELEVANT facts objectively. The latter is precisely what a person, who relies on majority opinion, does NOT do: Precisely as I have experienced YOU on this thread. I really expected more from a graduate of Bristol University; The standards in physics at that University must have deteriorated rapidly after Sir Nevill Mott left Bristol CIRCA 1950.

While a current is injected at z=0 and flows out a z=a, they can go further Only when charge-carriers are NOT injected at z=0 and do NOT leave at z=a.

Read my original solution again. You have the coordinates wrong.

The slab of material is carrying current in the x-direction. If there are injection and extraction contacts, they're somewhere off to ends of the x-axis. The sheets of charge that migrate in the z-direction are not getting to contacts.

No, johan. Once equilibrium voltage is established, equilibrium current is still NOT established. The current continues to increase everywhere within the superconductor at the same time, even while there is zero displacement current. Current does not (and cannot) simply increase from the point of injection.

Your continued failure is like clockwork.

Regardless, you completely misunderstood what was written. I know that English is not your first language but do try to keep up.

As regards standards at Bristol I can only speak from personal experience and say that the standard required was very high but I failed to match that very high standard. Consequentially I sought a career in industry instead of academia - I recognised MY limitations.

What I have seen in this thread is a group of people attempting to teach you the rudiments of physics and failing to do so but not because of the quality of the teaching.

You argue that you have revolutionised physics based on some anomalous experimental results. You quite correctly sought to explain this but when people point out that perhaps you may be mistaken instead of saying "gee, they may be right" you instead invent a global conspiracy against you.

Going back to my very first points in this thread:

  • If you had found room temperature superconductivity all that time ago the world would either have beaten a path to your door OR stolen your research but in any case would not have ignored you
  • If you had revolutionised physics then you'd be getting some traction at least. Look at all the crackpoint ideas that have been considered, however briefly

Johan, you have said in the past that you used to accept all of these physics experiments and proofs that you now find so ridiculous. Was your change of mind preceeded by any kind of traumatic event?

Johan, you have said in the past that you used to accept all of these physics experiments and proofs that you now find so ridiculous. Was your change of mind preceeded by any kind of traumatic event?
By an event yes. The event was not initially traumatic: It resulted from my experimental results which I obtained by extracting electrons from an n-type diamond into the vacuum by means of an anode; until these electrons reach the anode so that an electron-current starts to flow from the diamond to the anode.

That it is an electron current can be proved by the generation of Bremstrahlung when they enter and slow down within the anode. It was thus also a miniature EM-ray source. This result, in itself was noteworthy; and if I did not repeat my experiment many times to study the properties of the extracted electrons, and just published the fact that I can extract electrons without generating dielectric breakdown, I might have had no difficulty in getting it published.

What I, however, found is that after at first, a non steady-state current flowed, a further increase in the voltage, caused a steady state current; but now there is no Bremstrahlung: Thus, no electrons are being accelerated into the anode anymore. A phase formed between the diamond and the surface which shorted the two surfaces together. Furthermore, this phase is stable and remains even after switching off the power supply.

The first obvious possible candidate was contamination. I do not want to describe all the experiments we did since there are too many. But we clearly established that it cannot be contamination. And when breaking the phase by suddenly opening the gap between the diamond and anode, this phase slowly disappears until it is not there anymore. One then had to start all over gain until the "contamination" eerily reproduced itself under exactly the same physical conditions. The compelling conclusion was that this stable phase must be forming from the electrons in the gap.

Once this was accepted as the only possible explanation, it became very quickly clear, from standard Solid State Physics, why such a phase must form from electrons alone. The electrons are being extracted by the electric-field between the diamond and the anode, filling up the gap between the diamond and the anode, until they connect the diamond and anode so that a current flows: But even though a current is now flowing, the electric-field present within the gap will keep on extracting further electrons into the gap. This, in turn, means that the density of charge-carriers within the gap increases so that the resistivity of the phase keeps on decreasing. Thus, the voltage across the phase must decrease until it eventually becomes zero. Free electrons within the gap can then not be accelerated anymore.

One would expect that the current should stop flowing at this point. But if it does, the electrons will push one another out of the gap. This means that an electric-field will then re-appear that extracts more electrons from the diamond to replenish the electrons which are leaving the gap.

But what happens instead is that an equilibrium phase forms from the electrons within the gap; within which there is NO electric-field even when there is no current flowing through it or when there is a current flowing through it.

Thus instead of pushing each other out of the gap, the electrons entangle to form a single holistic wave within the gap: Similar to two electrons forming a covalent bond, or four electrons forming a double-bond or six electrons forming a triple bond. In my experiment millions of electrons are forming a macro-bond.

This is where my trauma started since this result is compelling proof that “wave-particle” duality must be wrong; and when you follow the thread further it also proves that Bohr’s principle of complimentarity is wrong as well as the Born rule based on inbuilt probabilities in Nature. Thus I had to do soul-searching and accept that what I have believed, and taught, for many years must be wrong. Fortunately, I have always believed that a physicist must be willing to accept the verdict if it happens that he is proved (by experiment and impeccable logic) to have been wrong.

Johan, you have said in the past that you used to accept all of these physics experiments and proofs that you now find so ridiculous. Was your change of mind preceeded by any kind of traumatic event?

No, it was simply preceded by getting old. His mind no longer works the way it once did. He has memory problems now, as well as cognitive impairment.

Age is cruel.

The slab of material is carrying current in the x-direction. If there are injection and extraction contacts, they're somewhere off to ends of the x-axis. The sheets of charge that migrate in the z-direction are not getting to contacts.
Why will they migrate into the z-direction if there is NO electric-field in this direction? Please stop posting physics-claptrap!

No, johan. Once equilibrium voltage is established, equilibrium current is still NOT established. The equilibrium voltage across a superconductor is ZERO!! GET IT???

Thus while there is a voltage across a superconductor, there is NOT an equilibrium current, and this voltage will decrease to become zero when the equilibrium current is established. Thus until equilibrium is established the voltage will change: ergo, a displacement current!!! For God's sake: At least try to think for yourself.
