Are there any other choices? Is it really only a choice between Bitcoin and Kim Jong Il?

Anarchy is peace.

The State is war.

Socialist chaos != anarchy

I would note that the countries of Luxembourg, Liechenstein, Andorra, Monte Carlo or San Marino haven't attacked anyone recently. Switzerland's last war was against Napoleon, the Swedish last fought against Napoleon too, so it doesn't seem to actually apply....

Capital resources, such as routers and power plants, don't disappear in the absence of a State.

Well, no, but both routers and power plants require maintenance and administration, and that's done by people. More to the point, it's done by people who're paid to do that. If the currency collapses these people will no longer be paid, so they won't show up to work -- they'll be busy elsewhere, doing their best to feed themselves and their families with barter, farming and creative readjustment of property rights. Pretty soon, der blinkenlichten will start to blink and go out, one by one.

There has been no example of this is human history whatsoever.

That is because historically, the strong have dominated the weak.

It wasn't until the invention of firearms that equality of strength in personal arms was achieved.

The gun is the great power equalizer between men. It can make old ladies just as feared as young men.

As technology moves forward, the ability for individuals to shirk off the tyranny of the majority or those of superior strength will increase to the point where individuals will be able to remove themselves from the violence of their oppressors completely.

It hasn't happened historically because the technology to keep ones person and property safe from the theft of mobs and despots has not existed until now.

Have you considered a possibility of one person owning a BIGGER gun than another?

We know, because we've seen it happen several times throughout history since the invention of firearms, that firearms are force multipliers, not equalizers.

And it's not just owning firearms.

It's the willingness to use them against people.

Firearms as the great equalizer, hmm. For some reason I'm reminded of the MAD doctrine. That's not really a "peace" I want to live under.

I didn't realize the Afghanis and Iraqis had no guns...

Ultimately this is not about redeeming coins for dollars.

This is about setting price levels in Bitcoins for goods and services and replacing the dollar.

Are you under the impression that things would cost LESS if we used bitcoins ? Considering it's a limited commodity, I would disagree.

The bitcoin client can run on smart phones and laptops which can be charged locally, along with local wifi networks. A fully functional internet is not necessary for commerce to be conducted.

Now you're just babbling.

The US government (among many others) has aircraft carriers full of jets, battalions of soldiers, ICBMs, chemical weapons they won't admit to having.... and a few kooks with guns are going to overcome that?

The best change that can happen will happen through the ballot box.

If you look at the vendors currently accepting Bitcoins, a huge number of them are VPN, networking, or web hosting services.

Really now?

How many of them are carriers?
How many of them own and operate as much as a single mile of fiber?

How many of them would be able to protect their maintenance crews in the absence of a working police force?

You know what happens without the police, don't you?

Do you realize that theft and even sabotage of telecommunication lines is a common problem in some areas, due to the value of copper amongst other things?

Yes, exactly! I'm sure that's why the U.S. Navy SEALS recruit so many old ladies.

Actually, the concept of police arrived AFTER the firearm was invented, and partly because of it....for the very reasons MichaelSuede mentions.

To be fair, the MAD doctrine appears to have worked pretty much as advertised. The world has yet to see someone nuked for adopting the MAD doctrine. Adopting the firearms doctrine, on the other hand, consistently leads to people getting shot in the face.

I didn't say it didn't work, but it led to some pretty scary times.
I don't want to have to think that the only reason every random person walking down the street doesn't shoot me is because I might shoot them back. That's psychotic.
