Here is a link to a pretty good free documentary about a reported battle between Some residents of Kelly, Kentucky and possible space aliens back in the fifties. It features interviews with surviving witnesses and some fun community theatre grade recreations of the incident.

It makes you wonder what really happened that night. :)

Regards, Canis

I find the most believable explanation is that they were Owls who felt threatened and went on the attack. Coupled with mass hysteria, it seems pretty believable to me.

Oh, and quite possibly we're not talking about the brightest bunch of folks in the world here.

Edit: These guys, to be precise - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Horned_Owl

They had the presence of mind to shoot. I can assure you that any owls who decide to 'feel threatened' and attack by repeatedly popping up outside my windows will be similarly treated to a face full of lead, presuming there's an appropriate delivery apparatus within reach.

ETA: I mentioned this supposed incident in this thread because it is a cool and unusual UFO claim that differs from the overcooked paradigm.

Wouldn't it be great to have a time machine, so you could go back and watch puzzling events like this happen in real time? What amazing things we could learn about human nature.

At best, you'd get to see alien beings, at worst, you'd get to see an amazing spectacle where rabid Owls attack some redneck's house and scare the living crap out of them.

Or you could wind up creating the puzzling event you went back to investigate.

Owls are certainly strange.
There are many near my house. They are nocturnal; noisy; and can fly almost silently.
This is a great combination of features to inspire those bent on the paranormal.
I've heard the banshee for instance...an invisible; flying; screaming terror; mere feet from my head on a pitch black night.
Boring explanation?

Owl nails a rabbit at night; rabbit isn't dead yet; it lets out a horrific screaming noise as the owl takes it to a safe place to consume.
I live in the woods.
There's an enormous array of things that go "bump' in the dark.
Skunks mating for instance. I've witnessed this up close and personal and it comes with some of the most god-awful sounds one could imagine.
Bob-cats also make some hellish noises.

here's one I've witnessed dozens of times:
A black snake takes a large bull frog from behind; frog's head not engulfed. That frog will cry like a baby; sometimes for half an hour; sound moving quickly as the snake tries to take it to a safer site to finish the slow swallowing process.
Not many people are privy to such sights and sounds. Its easy to imagine the casual reaction to such otherwise unexplained natural phenomena.
how many here knew that a bull frog can make a very loud crying noise?
Or that a rabbit can scream?

i could share a lot more odd nature observations. i enjoy observing to the point of sleeping outside at night. A bit eccentric I suppose. yet I've slept outside for almost 30 years now.
We are often visited by groups of coyotes at night. talk about some weird noises! And mostly invisible. Add to that the occasional sounds of their prey before it dies and you've got some serious weird.

Screech owls? Hoo-boy.
Flying squirrels are very common where I live. Even veteran hillbillies often are unaware of these animals existence because unlike me they sleep inside.
There is so much nocturnal action in the temperate forest; so much of it is missed.
Flying squirrels sounds are right at the edge of our hearing range.
The high pitched noises emanate from high in the trees; move quickly lower as they descend to the ground to eat something or mate. very spooky stuff.

I use to encourage flying squirrels by leaving sunflower seeds on my outdoors bed rail.
i could actually pet them. they lost all rational fear of me. This is one entertaining bunch of rodents if you've never had the pleasure. Too bad they carry typhus.
That sort-of ruined it for me.

To this day I hear stuff that I can't explain. Yet going by what I've witnessed I'm not terribly surprised by it. Entertained; intrigued; enchanted even...yes.

(Little green men? Of course. We've enslaved them and they do our bidding. i let them stay in the basement. They're in the garden as I type; picking tomatoes.)

The interviews and news broadcasts (I assume they are the originals) are interesting. The reenactments, not so much. But for people who'd rather not watch a drawn out film version of something one could get the gist of more quickly:

CSICOP: Siege of ‘Little Green Men’: The 1955 Kelly, Kentucky, Incident

Self declared UFO investigator response to the CSICOP article

Thanks for the assist, SG. I can't wait to check these links out! :)

I did love those cheesy reenactments, though. :D
