Michelle Bachmann could be our next president.

Lots of nonsense in this one thread:

Tom Petty's "American Girl" is not about a girl who commits suicide.

While John Wayne was not born in Waterloo, his parents did live there for a brief period after their marriage.

Bachmann's husband took Medicaid patients? What was he supposed to do, turn them away?

I'm no fan of Bachmann, but people around here are deranged about her.

I hope she's ignored the cease and desist request long enough for Petty to sue her for some real money. Then the scandal will be when that money is paid out from the campaign budget, much to the chagrin of donors. Either that, or she tries to fundraise for her failed run after the election, and donors are reluctant to pony up knowing that some of it went to settle a lawsuit that should have been avoided.

Well, her campaign may actually have the right to play the song if the purchased the proper BMI license.

However, Michele should be carefull, lest Petty pen a song mocking her that takes off.

How about something along the lines of Carly Simon's "you're so vain?" Or Fogerties "Zantz cant dance."

This smacks of desperation on your part. You know as well as anyone that John Wayne's parents' brief residence in Waterloo is entirely beside the point.

Desperation to do what? I've already said that I'm no fan of Bachmann. Let's remember that the quote that Bachmann's getting scolded for is this:

"I want them to know just like John Wayne is from Waterloo Iowa, that's the spirit I have too."

Okay, it's poorly phrased, but what kind of a dingdong would say that she meant John Wayne Gacy, who lived in Waterloo for about a year and a half in his mid-20s? I lived in California for three years in my mid-20s and nobody would say I was from California.

So it seems obvious that Bachmann must have heard about John Wayne's parents living in Waterloo when she was a kid, and mistakenly formed the impression that Wayne himself was from there. It's a mistake, but an understandable one.

So Bachmann, like Wayne, was in a labor union full of communists?

Michele:
“They want to see two girls come together and have a mud wrestling fight, and I’m not going to give it to ‘em.”

Ten Bucks says Larry Flint releases the video next week.

Does that justify her ignoring Petty's cease and desist letter? Does it justify her using Petty's song without his permission in the first place?

Nope. And I'd think that a "values" candidate would be wise to stay away from Petty's catalog anyway.

Gosh, she's a fool:

John Wayne's parents' first home was in Waterloo, Iowa and he was from Iowa," she said. "And of course the main point I was making are the sensibilities of John Wayne, which is patriotism, love of country, standing up for our nation, that positive enthusiasm is what America's all about ... and that's of course my main point.

Bolding mine. John Wayne choose not to serve in the military in World War II. Let's not forget his two divorces, his high-profile affairs, and that at one time he was a socialist.

Well it's definitely patriotic to shill for cigarette manufacturers and maintain integrity by dying of lung cancer!

And apparently he held the Tea Party, true-blue American belief in white supremacy!

I would hope that Bachmann (in an effort to try to avoid the impression that she didn't stick her foot so far down her throat that it emerged from her backside) would not endorse the political leanings of John Wayne. That would be a major mistake.

Read Da Duke's Playboy interview. Get his views on white supremacy and how Native Americans were treated. They ain't pretty, Pilgrim.

That said, there is one thing I liked about John Wayne: he rightly criticized Ronald Reagan for not being able to distinguish facts from opinion (what Wayne called "point of view").

Not to mention his oh so patriotic draft dodging in World War II, and his support for the Hollywood blacklist.

I think that line may be a little fuzzy. He may have chosen to avoid service in WW II, unlike Henry Ford and others who put their movie careers on hold to serve overseas, but he may have been prevented from serving by a studio that would not let him out of his contract. Perhaps the line is clearer than I imagine and if hard evidence is presented that shows he could have served and decided not to, then let him be branded as such.

Always been a big fan of this type of rationalization.

Never mind the raging hypocrisy of lining your pockets with money from a program you claim to be ideologically opposed to... they simply had no choice but to accept those Medicaid patients. No choice at all!

Military service in wartime, if not any time, trumps any employment contract. He could have joined if he really wanted to. Here's more on it:

Here is a Cecil Adams column where he talks about the fact it appears Wayne did have the choice, but chose not to serve.

Do Democrats still use the pre-Bush tax cut rates?
