Which God or Gods do you believe in and why not the other ones?

I'm not notable enough around here to be mentioned by name yet?

I think you appear too rational to be lumped in with the dogmatic fundies. You have to get a bit more fire and brimstone into your schtick before you properly earn Atheist scorn.

I use to pray to a porcelain god, but he never answered my prayers, so I stopped believing in him.

So I believe that Yahweh in giving these simple restrictions to man, would result in all of us living a happy fulfilled lives.

What makes you think these "simple restrictions" come from Yahweh or any other supernatural source? All sensible people, of all religions and of none, including in cultures that have never heard of Yahweh, recognize the harm done by lying, stealing, etc. Honestly, we can figure this out on our own -- and we have, all over the world and throughout history.

To believe is to practice; so it can be stated –the God I believe in is Yahweh the God of Israel.
That means that I follow his commands not to lie not to steal and not to commit adultery or covet my neighbours’ wife.

To love my neighbour means not to lie to him or her; not to steal from them.
Further only to eat what Yahweh decrees.

To regard the union of marriage as the cardinal function in society.

I did say I would refrain from posting—but this one did get my attention.

Fair enough, but you do realize that there are many, many Gods that hold the same commandments. Why then choose Yahweh in specific and exclude all the other ones?

I'm speaking to you yrreg, DOC, Epix, Kumar and all the other theists.

Please take some time to sit down, think about this well for a while before you stampede to type, and explain:

1) Which God or Gods (And name each one of them) do you believe in and why?

2) Which God or Gods do you not believe in and why?

Do not write anything else that doesn't address these two questions. Don't tell me about how you think atheists are a bunch of boring pricks, don't tell me about how you once saw The Matrix and now how come this isn't a virtual reality simulation, blablabla. Sorry, I have to be really strict here to make sure you don't diverge into some meaningless 10.000 characters post that doesn't really address the topic. We already have the Timecube for laughing purposes, don't bring that in here. Remain on topic. Otherwise, I will report those posts that derail this thread.
Like a satanist I feel I personally am a god. I have evidence for my existence and when I want or need somehing done I rely on myself to get it done. Incidentally I'm no Satanist.

I am a theist, but unfortunately I cannot answer your question because I don't believe in any Gods(I don't believe in anything).
In the light of many years of investigation and study on subjects relating to existence, including science. On balance I regard the existence of Gods* more likely than not.

Interesting. Any chance youd like to expand upon this, perhaps in another thread?

One could make the case that a deistic god is *possible* Id imagine, but you have evidence that a theistic god is more likely than not? Coupled with this, you claim this is a logic based position and not one of belief/faith?

These are big claims. If it is true, you should be able to show others and have them agree with you. Care to spend the time and start another thread?

thanks

Ok why.
Firstly it makes me feel good to live with these restrictions.
Secondly to lie would make me feel bad—so I have stopped lying.
Thirdly to steal means I would be breaking the law; that would make me feel bad, I would be prosecuted and sent to jail.
To commit adultery would mean that I would have to lie—and to lie makes me feel bad.

So I believe that Yahweh in giving these simple restrictions to man, would result in all of us living a happy fulfilled lives.

To eat that which is not detrimental to ones health means that I can enjoy a healthy life.

So why do I accept the laws of Yahweh—they give me as sense of freedom?

Why do you believe a god has told you to do those things?
I don't steal, I do lie when it is the morally correct thing to do, I eat well. All without a supernatural being telling me.

I'm not notable enough around here to be mentioned by name yet?

I haven't crossed swords with you yet (like I have with Paul B and Punsssh) however you seem to be a token rational theist so that's not likely to ever happen and it's also unlikely your name will get lump together with those other names.

You are not unbalanced enough.

I disagree!

While Avalon is indeed polite and lucid enough in his writing style, he has never actually given a decent, rational answer as to why he holds his beliefs and has basically flatly denied that scientific discoveries have shown many of his core beliefs to be simply false.

Politely and clearly stating irrational beliefs is still not a balanced viewpoint.

Bolding mine:

I understand rational discourse and critical thinking, but I do not understand why the vast majority of non believers think its a question of realism and nothing more. The question is larger than that and the answers more numerous.

This is a trope I've seen from believers over and over again, and it does a better job than most of making me want to reach through the screen and shake the person who typed it by the lapels...

The problem is that if that's what you believe, then you've grossly misunderstood the question. The question we're asking (and answering) absolutely is a question of realism and nothing more. At the risk of stating a blatant tautology, the question "Do any gods exist?" concerns itself solely with whether or not any gods really, actually exist. It is decidedly not larger than that, and the answers are not more numerous; they are either "yes" or "no." The question that you claim to be larger, is simply not the same question. It may be an interesting question in its own right, but it neither answers, nor invalidates the premise of, the question we're concerned with. Whether or not belief (correct or not) in gods (existent or not) is beneficial or serves a useful function, is an entirely different question than we're asking. Whether or not the results of such a function "matter" more than the accuracy of the beliefs they're based on, is yet another entirely different question. If you want to claim that the answers to those questions are more important and more meaningful than the answer to the question we're posing, then come out and say that (and be prepared to defend it). But don't pretend that making such a claim in any way addresses the actual question.

So you're saying you believe in the idea that there is an intelligent creator but you haven't narrowed it down to any of the Gods from any of the current existing religions? Is this it?

I don't hold a belief, I regard the principle of intelligent creators as a likely scenario.

I don't define these entities, one or more of the long list of Gods may be a name of an entity equivalent to my definition. But as I take little interest in them I couldn't suggest a likely candidate.

That could also be the definition for sufficiently advanced aliens. Depending on your definition of "the fabric of reality" that could even be a definition for humans.
Yes

Personally, I really would like an answer to the original post that doesn't involve circular logic. I've asked this exact set of questions of Christians before and have gotten the "God exists because Bible says so and the Bible is true because God created it" response. Occasionally I have had it told to me that if I was touched by the Hold Spirit I would understand all these things but that the Holy Spirit cannot be explained only experienced
.I am not using circular logic, I regard the existence of intelligent creators a naturally occuring phenomena, from bacteria, plants, humans, creator gods, etc etc.

Hopefully someone has a good, well thought out explanation that I can understand. I haven't found one yet but I'm still willing to listen and hope.
I can't provide an answer as I don't believe in these sort of Gods, sorry.

Sorry sir but that is not true. Everybody lies.

Why are you sorry Sir; is it because you cannot stop lying or you do not want to stop lying?

Lying or telling the truth is a choice—I chose to stop lying and speak only the truth—it makes me feel good to be known as a man who is truthful and true to my word.

Fair enough, but you do realize that there are many, many Gods that hold the same commandments. Why then choose Yahweh in specific and exclude all the other ones?

There are not many who claim what Yahweh claims.
He claims he is the only God, and all other gods are the imaginations of men.
So in a sense there is a challenge for all other gods to prove their superiority.

This can be done by each god; to send his or her representative.
There cannot be more than one God, who created all things; because this is the principal claim of all deities—is it not?

The commands of Yahweh are unique to him—the keeping of his commands brings about a sense of joy and peace; there are no stringent rituals that one must follow in order to find this peace; other than telling the truth and being honest.

Then again we have to evaluate a god by their representative and the life their lived.
Jesus being the representative of Yahweh; and the Gospels being a record of how Jesus lived. The injunction is to follow the example of Jesus.
