TAM9 hotel sharing, Wed.-Mon.

Just filter out anything Scrut says... oh, and don't refer to anything he says as "cute"... it's for your own good. :)

I'm keenly aware of this fact. I have to live in the same city as this man!

A boy, girl, or any combination of the two is fine by me.

If you can't find somewhere closer, I'm staying at Gold Coast for that entire week and am trying to save on taxi fares to and from SP. You're welcome to crash there if you want to help cut the costs.

Here's the deal. I have a room booked from Wednesday with a Monday departure. I booked it with a single king sized bed. If I can get that changed to two queens, I would be happy to share the room. Having just suffered another financial setback, any money I can save would be a good thing.

What you need to know is that it's a smoking room. And I have been told that I snore. (I've never actually heard myself snoring, but it comes from a fairly reliable source.) If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll call the SouthPoint and see if I can get the bed thing worked out.

I like to do updates to my site, The Skeptic Friends Network, from the room, usually at down times or at night. So if you need wifi, perhaps we can share that too. Not sure how that would work.

I'm 61 and male if that matters to you... This will be my 6th TAM.

IIRC (but I would double check to make sure), the wi-fi at the SP is charged per device, not per room.

Which is why you travel with a router... or another device that can play access point...

I'm still trying to work out how to get data access in the US. Any tips?

My UK service provider charges £5 for 25Mb in one day, which is pretty close to daylight robbery. Is there any way to get a SIM only deal including data for July?

I have booked a two-queen-bed room for Wed.-Sat. inclusive. Looking for TWO roomies to share it. I did book at the sale rate a few months ago. Got a great deal. Have one roomie aboard for 2011 -- roomed with him last year, great time, no problems. I am 53 years old and a non-smoker. I am not a prude but expect my roomies to behave. Fine with me if you come and/or go at any hour of the day as long as you observe quiet while one or more of your other roommates is sleeping. Respond to steveb@e-z.net and/or call me at 503-246-9520. This offer usually fills up fast because takers know they'll end up with safe comrades and pay a reasonable cost. Let me know ASAP. First come, first served. See you at TAM!

Cute. Still need a room. ;)

Ok, am I really the only one who thinks these two should hook up? (For room-sharing-at-TAM purposes, duh...)

I think that the leading contender for me so far is T-Mobile's prepaid plan. Partly because I know that people have made it work well enough with iPhones in the past, and partly because they charge something like a $1 per day for unmetered (slow) data.

Though, the price for a regular month of service from either AT&T or T-mobile is about $60 at the low end, with 200MB of data, so I might go that route too. I have a sim cutter and an unlocked iPhone and I'm not afraid to use them.

Not sure on how good reception is with either of these providers in the SP.

If you find something, let me know. At the moment my plan is to pick up a cheap $10 PAYG phone from Target or somewhere for calls and just use my UK phone at wifi hotspots when available.

There aren't any free wifi hotspots in the South Point, and you'd probably need a lift to get to the nearest shops. It may be doable, but I'd like to know what I was after, not have to decide in the shop; the cheapest pre-paid phone I can see on the Target web site is $80. :(

I'm staying offsite, I should be able to cope without access while I'm at SP. I'm also in LA for the 2 weeks before TAM, I'm going to keep my eye out for a cheap throwaway phone while I'm there. But like you say, some sort of data plan would be the ideal solution.

I've been hearing that the ice cream / coffee shop in the lobby has open wi-fi.

If your phone is unlocked, you can get a no-contract (pay-as-you-go or regular) at a kiosk. I can't seem to find out if there's a mobile vendor in the airport, but hopefully.

Yeah mine's unlocked. PAYG sims are free over here for certain networks, or sometimes just a quid or two. Is it similar over there?

Seems to vary a bit; you can get them free with contracts or if you order online, but it's not uncommon to see them at $9.99 if you're buying them in a Best Buy or something. I've heard different stories about what they run in the mobile shops and kiosks, but if it's more than $10, I'd walk away.
