Post-TAM Tour?

Seems like not really the kind of thing that can be done strictly as a driving tour... It may be too hot for extensive hiking, (of course, I'm insane and rode my bike 12 miles a day before the conference every day last year) but I hope we could find a few interesting spots to stop and get out and wander around, much like we did for Death Valley a few years ago.

Red Rocks is actually pretty good for a visit like that. They have a ring road that goes around the park, with several parking lots at intervals, where there are interesting things to see.

At least one of the parking lots is close to a small valley sort of place, where there's a spring that feeds a lot of plants in the area. I'd be interested to see what that looks like in July, as I've only ever seen in in Winter and Spring....

Here's a shot from my last visit

I imagine July will be a bit different :D

Omani-style death hike, it is! To make it a proper geo hike, we all need to bring backpacks and fill them with rocks as we go along :-)

I'm joking, obviously. We'll see who's going on the tour and how hot it is and how fit everyone is. Last time we did the tour (in January) we took everyone on a ~1 mile hike. That might be doable. If not, you really can see quite a bit of the geology from near the road and with very short (maybe a couple hundred meter) walks.

I'd prefer to keep this fairly chillax. I'll talk a little bit about the rocks and otherwise we can just look around at them. Red Rocks is pretty; it will be nice to get out of the casino. I think I didn't go outside for 48 hours or something last TAM... crazy.

I call shotgun in Mr. Ottle's car!

I say we leave no later than 1ish... hottest part of the day. Excellent :-)

Everyone one on the thread is invited to the wedding! Hey it's a good excuse, I figure if you are willing to fly to SA you can come to the wedding!

Did they just add Steve Novella to the schedule? I coulda sworn Desiree Schell was the last speaker.

We should probably say that we intend to leave around 1:30 PM or whenever Steve is done, if his thing is running a bit late.

Don't want to head out too late as some people have Sunday flights... I say we leave at 1pm firm. What do other people think?

Steve's great, but haven't we heard him speak a bajillion times? :-)

What if we bring potato salad?

Oh, alright then :-)

Seriously, though, if you ever want to visit Cape Town again (preferably after I defend my thesis in March / April 2012) we'd love to have you! My official graduation plan is to become a bum and live off my husband (he mines GOLD) for several months before venturing into either academia or industry. So I'll have plenty of time for visitors.

Everyone should email Jackie and tell him (he who MINES GOLD for a living) that the American custom of paying your mother in law GOLD for her daughter is like a law...and like...police and stuff will come arrest him...yeah even in South Africa...if he doesn't like...give me some gold and maybe some of the diamonds. Hey blood diamonds are ok as long as it's his blood.

Because if he loved my daughter he would so DO IT....and like.. it's a law or something...right?

If I was marrying your daughter, I would have already taken care of this.

Steve is so great, he's worth hearing a bajillion times! And, not everyone going to TAM has heard him a bajillion times, either.

But, you make a good point about flights. How about we compromise, and leave at 1:15 PM firm, when he is scheduled to end. And, if he runs late that's too bad. I'm sure it'll be on the DVD.

It's gonna take a bit to get everyone together anyway, might as well settle on a round number and go for 1.

Let's plan on leaving at 1pm. My friends pointed out that there's the live challenge at 5pm, so we want to make sure we're back in time for that :-)

My best friend (and matron of honor) and her husband are coming to TAM for the first time, and they're interested in the Red Rocks tour. Mr. Ottle, can they grab two seats in your vehicle?

My friend is an oceanographer/engineer and her husband is a geophysicist, so there will be some more sciencey people :-)

Having been to a live challenge before, I can tell you that you'd find more excitement staying in the desert and watching rocks erode.

Yeah, y'know... I was pretty excited about the challenge thing for two years in a row, but it really was very much like watching rocks erode, and if they aren't even gonna tell us in advance what it is, I'm just not sure I'm willing to miss the chance to take pretty pictures for it.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure exactly what kind of car I'll have. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you in Vegas, and we can nail things then.

I bet I can get one of THEM to invite me to the wedding ;)

And it wouldn't be an adventure if we weren't out in the most ridiculously hottest part of the day :) I think I'll start hydrating now...
