John Edwards to face criminal charges

big whoop. The donations that ordinary citizens made should be returned and the donations that were made by those knowingly cover his sorry butt should be turned over to some program for battered women.

He can afford to pay it, from what I have heard.

There is really no reason for anyone to care how much he suffers now.

The first psychic ever indicted for fraud?!? Heh, wishful thinking lets me down again.

So you support rich people being allowed to buy their way out of legal trouble?

That's some world class spin right there. Send that resume to FNN.

If JE used campaign money to pay for that squeeze, then I know some folks that want their money back.

On deck, the Senator from Nevada, John Ensign.

If only he'd went in to Fortune Telling instead, he could have seen it coming.

Looks like some spirit guide was asleep at the wheel.

Wha? A politician? BAH!

No. I am saying that financially ruining them is appropriate if they are convicted of a felony after people have given them large sums of money. There should, for instance, not be a pennny in the estates of Ken Lay or Bernie Madoff.

"Spin"? lefty was suggesting Edwards just give the money back since he's rich, and not have to face any criminal prosecution.

If it's campaign money you can't assign it to any particular donor or donors.

Now I'm confused, do you or don't you want Edwards to face charges?

Reading a couple of articles on the case indicates it may be a little more complex than comments hereabouts indicate. The issue, apparently is that some of Edwards' wealthier friends were paying off Hunter (reportedly to the tune of $700,000).

The issue becomes:

The federal investigation has been underway since at least early 2009,when Edwards confirmed that political groups linked to him were among the potential targets of a probe into his finances. Sources familiar with the probe have said that investigators are focusing on whether money paid to Hunter and former Edwards campaign aide Andrew Young constituted campaign donations, since the funds helped the campaign by keeping the affair secret.

So it's not that Edwards took campaign cash and paid off Hunter. It's that others paid Hunter and the feds are claiming that this amounted to campaign contributions, which given the rumored amounts would be far in excess of the maximum allowed under campaign finance law.

After thinking about it, I don't think it's right to call them campaign contributions. They might be bribes (although not necessarily illegal bribes), but not campaign contributions.

Of course I want him to face charges. I also want to see him go out of pocket to restore the money that people had laid out to get him elected President so that that money becomes available for the next election cycle.

The rich are walking away from the scenes of their crimes with entirely too much money in their pockets.

If people weren't such gullible, blind idiots, Edwards never would have gotten any campaign money in the first place. I had him pegged the first I saw him and heard him speak. I said to myself, "That's gotta be one of the sorriest narcisso-turds I've ever seen."

Indictment handed down and arrest warrant issued:

A federal grand jury on Friday indicted two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards. He is charged with four counts of illegal campaign contributions, one count of conspiracy and one count of false statements.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he is expected to appear in federal court in Winston-Salem at 2:30 p.m. Friday and plead not guilty.

The false statements charge might be the most serious. Look for a mug shot on TSG later today.

Ken Lay was not found guilty of anything.

Lay was found guilty on 10 counts. He died before sentencing. http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/25/news/newsmakers/enron_verdict/index.htm

No.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/special/enron/4265806.html

Former Enron Chairman Ken Lay's criminal conviction was vacated and his indictment dismissed by a judge today.

U.S. District Judge Sim Lake granted the request by Lay's estate to vacate the conviction, an outcome that was widely anticipated given legal precedent. He also dismissed the indictment used to bring him to trial earlier this year.

Ergo, he was not found guilty of anything.
