Is it still 2008 in Ireland?

And Cleon, if Obama not knowing the date isn't important ...

Perhaps these items were ...

Oh ... and should I mention the report that Obama, Michelle and company won't drink England's tap water (guess it's too 3rd world).

Nor Buckingham Palace's private reserve mineral water (does he have a *sensitive* tummy?).

Surely that would rank in the top 10 insults if true? :D

Glen Beck was at this nonsense last night. Unfortuntely most of the UK seem to like Obama and laugh at this kind of rubbish which has been written by someone with little idea of what really insults the British and also seems to have severe case ODS

We know where England is located, and we understand the difference between England and the other constituent countries (with their own devolved parliaments) of Great Britain and of the UK. Hell, most of us even understand the different meanings of the British Isles, the Commonwealth, the Crown Dependencies and the Overseas Territories.

Using England as a synonym for Great Britain, as you did above when referring to alleged "insults" to Great Britain as insults to England, is one thing that is guaranteed to raise the hackles of most British citizens, and not just the ones from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It's worse than that. BAC posted "Ireland", not NI. In relation to an article about Westminster Abbey, which is of course in England.

England is of course in the United Kingdom, and also on the island of Great Britain.

Ireland is neither.

He then tried to support his gross error by posting a link to a page which described England as the most important country in the United Kingdom and Great Britain (written for English primary school children, bless their chauvinistic little hearts).

To use England as a synonym for either the UK or Britain is a bit crass and ignorant, but it's not uncommon either.

To use "Ireland", a sovereign independent country which is neither part of the UK nor on the island of Great Britain, when you actually meant England, is.... just....

:dl:

Rolfe.

You never hear of rope a dope? :D

Yes.

What really just happened

A mistaken statement, followed by a grasping justification, followed by claims of trying to screw with us.

The ultimate fun in this is that BAC was attributing error to ignorance, and was hoist by his own petard.

Like, "You suck at English, everyone no's that 'your stupid' should be 'you're'! You must be an idiot!"

If there is something in error about my post, it is because I made a mistake. No more significant. BAC made a mistake. Obama made a mistake.

So Gnome ... is it still 2008 in Ireland? Why won't any of you answer that simple question? Afraid where it will lead vis-a-vis Obama's state of mind? Hmmmmmm? :D

It's worse than that since there isn't a country called "Ireland", that's the name of the 3rd largest island in Europe.

Yes - I confirm it is still 2008 in Ireland. Now what?

When BAC gets geography in a hopeless pickle, and tells an unconvincing convoluted story to explain it, is that a little frightening? Obama made a silly but ultimately inconsequential mistake. I don't see what is frightening about it.

Humans are quite good at making mistakes, some are done in the full glare of the public spotlight, and some are just titles of threads on the JREFF, seen by only a few.

Seriously? That's like saying there isn't a country called "Cuba."

What to call the Republic of Ireland is a long standing problem. Since it doesn't fill the whole of Ireland "Ireland" is unclear. Republic of Ireland or ROI is a bit clumsy and Eire has been largely given up on.

So there's hope for Daveland then? I wrote to Gerry Adams about it, but never got a reply.

Well don't you think he should clue us in on how he did it? Just think of all the hope and change we could bring to the US and the world?

I would imagine it would be a national secret. Need to know basis and all that. Keep an eye on your history books, if they start changing then let us know

In your state of mind, apparently there is no such thing as an error? What does that say about your goof about Ireland/England?

The answer is no, and Obama made a mistake. OH MY GOD THE PRESIDENT'S HUMAN!

Seriously, you're looking like an ass here. It doesn't mean he literally doesn't know what year it is. He just wrote the wrong one down. You can't tell me that everything you've ever written is an exact description of what you know, without error.
