Merged Interesting Analysis of Changing Media Attitudes toward 9/11 Alternative Theories

The Lone Ranger is a Truther? Suddenly the mask makes sense.

He's also a Holocaust denier. I'd wear a mask too if I were him. ;)

But to get back to the OP, it seems to me coverage of the truth movement in the mainstream media peaked around 2006 and has been declining ever since. Right wing conspiracy theories like birtherism are trending and being reported, but except for fringe characters like Jesse Ventura, no public figure will touch 9/11 truth. It's political poison.

I can see the media taking interest in the 9/11 Truth movement. As the 10th anniversary of the attacks approaches, they will be looking for human interest stories and a group of conspiracy theorists questioning the official story could be just the ticket. Conflict sells, after all.

My memory may be tricking me, but I seem to recall similar coverage for the JFK and Elvis people at 10 years, and that was the apex of popularity for both movements. Perhaps your title will be prophetic. I don't much care.

In any event, I do hope the 9/11 Truth movement gets some real media attention. I'd like to see their claims made in the glare of the spotlight. There's a lot less room for the rhetorical sleight-of-hand, tap dancing, and the hand waving of rebuttal that Truther's enjoy as a fringe phenomenon now.

As Louis Brandeis once remarked, "sunlight is the best disinfectant."

As the article is over a year old, what is the progress report?

1. Have there been any more 9/11 specials aired on public broadcasting stations (Iran, Syria etc... don't count)?

2. Has there been an increase in interest in the eight countries mentioned?

3. Does Obama or Cameron endorse 9/11 Truth?

4. Since the publication of the Troofer paper in Bentham, how many editors have quit and how many papers have since appeared in Bentham? Oh, and just what kind of peer-review are you talking about?

5. Professional charlatans are no less professional I suppose. I'll give you that one.

6. How many of this "pick of the week" book by Griffin actually got sold?

Seriously, just how much closer are you to achieving this delusional fantasy of yours?

ergo, I assume your reply to Sword_Of_Truth's assertion that no peer-reviewed papers have ever been submitted by the Truth Movement means you believe properly peer-reviewed papers have indeed been submitted to appropriately accredited scientific journals. Is my assumption correct? If this is true, would you please cite and link the papers. I promise I will read them with great interest.

III. The Changing Mainstream Media Treatment of 9/11 Evidence from early 2009 to early 2010: 18 Case Studies

Nothing new here. Yes, there was media attention over the past several years. We have seen this all before and laughed at it many times here. It starts off with the Daniel Sunjata opinion from the Rescue Me actor. Same as the Rosie O' Donut and Charlie fallacious appeal to misleading authority,no evidence is mentioned.

Case Study 1: The Dutch TV Mock Trial of Osama bin Laden, April 25, 2009

Gernot Rotter made claims that there were "things added" in the confession video. When you look into Mr. Rotters claims, you will see that the parts that he claims are in error, do not change the facts that OBL confessed.

http://www.historycommons.org/entity.jsp?entity=gernot_rotter

Case Study 2: Architect Richard Gage in Canada's "Financial Post", April 25, 2009

Jonathan Kay who wrote the article is in fact an Engineer. He in no way endorsed Gage, and after seeing the evidence Gage presented, he states that it was "effective". Did he change his mind? No!

Case Study 3: Norwegian State Radio's Public Debate on 9/11 Truth, May 21, 2009

Harrit's debate on his nanu nanu paper. Peer reviewed? We all know the answer.

Case Study 4: Architect Richard Gage on Fox News, May 28, 2009

Gage:

"uncanny" failure of 40,000 tons of structural steel columns that were designed to resist its collapse.

FAIL

he explained, various firefighters had reported large pools of molten iron at ground level.

FAIL

"The by-product of thermite is molten iron and it's dispersed throughout all this dust…and there are small chips of unignited thermite as well.

FAIL

Someone who had access to the elevator modernization, which was going on nine months earlier and was "immediately adjacent to the core columns and beams in the building."

Wow... Gage is accusing ACE elevator mechanics? I guess that News achors without any technical knowledge of the collapses would be impressed. Other than that: FAIL

Case Study 5: The National Geographic Documentary, "9/11: Science and Conspiracy", August 31, 2009

The claim was that "pseudo-scientific demonstrations " were used for debunking. Yeah, what it did was make the truthers look like a pack of idiots. Griffin more so than the others.

Case Study 6: Germany's Weekly TV Guide, "TV Hören und Sehen," August 31, 2009

Boat loads of garbage!

More of the recycled crap from 2006:

what force could pulverize 200,000 tons of steel

US engineer Neel Ginson: "In order to bring down this kind of mass in such a short period of time, the material must have been artificially exploded outwards."

"one can see small explosions in the Twin Towers always occurring before the floors are reached by the collapse line."

and: How were the victims identified by their fingerprints, when even the airplane steel had melted?

Case Study 7: Two California Newspapers Review the Role of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, September 2009

A&E Member:

"it takes too much energy" – energy that was not there – to collapse the buildings at free-fall speed, given the resistance that steel offers

Need I say more?

So, they showed some media coverage from 2009 to 2010... nothing since February 2010. All delivered the same old debunked crap, or outright lies.

Case Study 18 : An American Union Paper Calls for a New Probe, February 1, 2010

The New Hampshire Union Leader is a daily union newspaper seen by 143,000 people per month in the United States.

Beth Lamontagne Hall of the Union Leader wrote in February 2010 that "Keene resident Gerhard Bedding doesn't buy the government's version of what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, so he's working on a statewide campaign calling for another investigation into the terrorist attacks.58

Bedding and others, she reported, are petitioning New Hampshire's congressional delegates to push for an independent investigation into "all the evidence and unanswered questions" pertaining to the 9/11 attacks.

Quoting Bedding's statement that a new investigation is needed "in light of new evidence that has appeared in the last two years," she pointed out that he mentioned, in particular, the report that scientists had found traces of explosives at the World Trade Center.

Concluding Comment: (Independent). This article in a daily union newspaper is a significant indicator, more than eight years after the attacks, of the broadening concern over the truth about 9/11, and is another example of the widespread influence of the nano-thermite paper published by Dr. Harrit and his co-authors.

I found this one to be particularly amusing (given it's local for me). Putting aside the fact " The Union Leader" is not an "American Union" newspaper (whatever that means)*. This refers to a ballot initiative in New Hampshire (12 towns out of 234) that did not go well for the "truthers". We had a thread on it, a case study in fail.

* "Union Leader" refers to the fact New Hampshire is the first state to vote in elections and is the first primary.

You posted proof the 911 truth movement is comprised of paranoid conspiracy nuts who can't figure out 911. After reading the article 911 truth is nonsense. Makes the idea of thermite look like an insane person made it up out of thin air. Poor person is not able to comprehend the lies 911 truth pushes.

You posted nonsense from last year, your stuff is over a year old.

Elizabeth Woodworth is a retired professional health sciences librarian, and a freelance writer. She is the author of two published books and many articles on political and social justice issues. She has no clue why physics and math make the 911 truth movement a fringe organization of hearsay, lies and fantasy.

We'll need some sources for these figures, SoT.

I was wrong. The first poll wasn't October, but August.

The poll also found that 16 percent of Americans speculate that secretly planted explosives, not burning passenger jets, were the real reason the massive twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed.

The second poll was carried out by Zogby and was commissioned by 9/11 twoofers themselves.

There are three main schools of thought regarding the 9/11 attacks. The first theory is the official story, and maintains that 19 Arab fundamentalists executed a surprise attack
which caught US intelligence and military forces off guard. The second theory known as Let It Happen argues that certain elements in the US government knew the attacks were
coming but consciously let them proceed for various political, military and economic motives; and the third theory Made It Happen contends that certain US government elements
actively planned or assisted some aspects of the attacks. Based upon your knowledge of 9/11 events and their aftermath, which theory are you more likely to agree with?

Official Story: 63.6%
LIHOP: 26.4%
MIHOP: 4.6%
NS: 5.4%

With a US population of ~300 million, this means that roughly 34,000,000 Americans abandoned the twoof movement in the space of a single year.
How do you or Clayton explain this, Ergo?

There is a hallway in my house decorated with pictures and autographs of various celebrities I have met over the years. This thread make me want to put the Clayton Moore (it's actually autographed to my dad in 1959) photo at the bottom of a drawer. Then I remember this is just a sad wannabe.

Yeah, yeah... can someone let me know when the clock finally strikes midnight? I keep being told that it will and I don't want to miss it but, you know, boy who cried wolf and all that...

It won't. The "Clock of Truth" is ticking but the minute hand just kinda bumps a little and falls back as it hangs broken indefinitely pointing at the 6.

:D

5. These developments surely also reflect the general professionalism of the 9/11 Truth Movement, as exemplified by the emergence of not only Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth but also Firefighters, Intelligence Officers, Lawyers, Medical Professionals, Pilots, Political Leaders, Religious Leaders, Scholars, and Veterans for 9/11 Truth.

I don't pretend to speak for anyone other than myself. But, due to my career and my volunteer positions, respectively, I spend pretty much all my non-family time with engineers and firefighters.

First, I do know there are some out there who do believe the conspiracy claims. I do not find this surprising; when you have hundreds of thousands or millions of people in a given profession, you will find a portion who believe, well, whatever.

I can only report my personal experience, which is that not a single engineer or firefighter I have met has ever supported, or even mentioned, such claims to my knowledge. That includes guys I know who were at the Pentagon that day, guys I literally trust with my life on the fireground if things go bad. I mentioned the 9/11 conspiracy claims to one of them, and he just rolled his eyes.

Again, this is just my personal experience, but I can also report that to the best of my knowledge I've never met anyone who actually believes such conspiracy claims; again, at least they've never even mentioned them to me. I saw one "Question 9/11" sticker on one car once, a few years ago. That's it. By comparison, I have actually met one guy who believed the Apollo hoax claims - not that he was really that attached to it.

The clock is ticking.

I guess it will continue to tick. As far as I can tell, most people really aren't interested. When I close this browser window, the whole 9/11 conspiracy "movement" just disappears.
