Continuation Part 2 - Discussion of the Amanda Knox case

google truth

Needless to say I had never heard of Daric Richie before reading Rose's post. This looks like a stunt to me; anyone who publicly announces a particular POV, then 24 hours later dramatically declares a change of heart (on the basis of unspecified "crucial evidence" in the Massei report) has to have suspect motives.

We can be cautiously optimistic that the truth will belatedly be endorsed by the appeal court next month, and then of all the people left looking foolish, DR will be one of those at the top of the pile.

Kaosium,

If you google his first and last name together, you will find one or more people who think that Daric has a casual relationship with the truth. Who is actually telling the truth is unknown to me.

I notice that somehow the DNA became blood, which is especially curious as "DNA" in the original Italian would seem to be a huge clue as to what it might mean in English, perhaps 'DNA?' There must be a subtle nuance that I missed.
Other than that it seems to say they found human DNA in cats blood in trace three?

___________________

Kaosium,

Massei was opaque. The English Translation was wrong. Andrea Vogt properly explained why Tagliabracci (Raffaele's expert) spoke about the cat's blood....

"He also pointed out contradictions between the results and what Stefanoni actually wrote in her technical report. Specifically, Stefanoni wrote that a mattress cover from the downstairs apartment had tested positive for cat blood and negative for human DNA, when the actual results showed a positive result for human DNA." (See: Here)

That's just an error from Google:

It means that he took a towel from Meredith's bathroom, not that it was a bath towel (the bolded part more literally, "taking in her bathroom a towel in order to staunch the bleeding").

I have to say that I've never lived in a shared house where we didn't keep at least one towel in the bathroom for drying our hands, though usually I would keep a bath towel in my room as well. Assuming there were no towels left in the bathroom that morning, I think it very likely Rudy is telling the truth about where he got them. I can't see a reason he would lie about that, and it would have been easy to disprove if untrue just by asking the other three girls who lived there.

I also think that Guede was being truthful and accurate when he described fetching towels from the bathroom, although of course I think he was lying when he "explained" why he'd got the towels. Guede's other testimony has a pattern of trying to preempt the forensic evidence as much as it can, and I think the towel story fits that pattern: I think that Guede might have suspected that his DNA might have got onto the towels, and therefore he sought to offer an "innocent" explanation for that in advance.

Of course, Guede couldn't have known that the "crack" Perugia forensics team would store the towels in an incompetent manner, such that their worth as evidence was destroyed. If he'd known that in advance, maybe he wouldn't have offered any story about the towels at all.

BTW, I think it's best to ignore any discussion of "Daric Richie", who seems to be a confused and immature young man, with designs on being some sort of Web Superstar (in the mould, perhaps, of Perez Hilton). I personally can't believe that anyone - from any side of the debate - has had any form of dialogue with him whatsoever, but there you go. He also knows a lot less about webmail IP addressing than he thinks he knows :)

I am honoured to be confused with Kaosium. ;)

As it happens, the only way I got information on Daric Richie was by googling his name.

If you check his bio you will find out that he attended an ISP (Poetry) convention in Las Vegas and won an Editors Choice award. As it turns out just about anybody that sends in a poem has it chosen by the editor for an award and for the low, low price of 169 dollars shipping and handling, they will ship it to you in a flash. If you want to attend the convention it's only 600 bucks. LOL

Now he is supposed to be a successful author, I have even seen mention of the NY Times bestseller list and he does have 2 books listed under his pen name on Amazon. Curiously, neither is in stock and there are no customer reviews. It seems they are print on demand books. I didn't bother to look into it further my guess is that the number of books to make the NY Times bestseller list that are print on demand is less than 1.

I agree with you that Guede was aware that there could well be his DNA on the towels, and that this is one reason why he mentioned them (I think he admitted going into the bathroom for the same reason, because he knew he'd left traces in there too). I lean towards accepting his explanation for fetching them, though. Partly this is because I think that where the towels were found fits his explanation better than any other I can think of. The main alternative explanation I've heard - that he arranged the towels to prepare for a sexual assault - simply doesn't seem that likely to me. This seems to have been an opportunistic, disorganized assault/murder by someone who had no experience of this type of crime, and for that reason an "Oh crap, what do I do now?" reaction (to quote a poster on IIP) seems more plausible to me than the sort of cold calculation that would be necessary for someone to actually arrange the scene in the way that's been suggested.

So I think Guede was quite happy to admit that he fetched the towels because he probably did use them in the way that he claims, albeit motivated more by self-preservation than compassion. Guede's lawyers went so far as to ask the Court to further test the towels for his DNA, to prove he was the one to take them into the room. Had they been used for the purposes of a sexual assault, I think that would have been a very big risk to take.

A belated welcome back, by the way. :)

Why thank you!

Another thought occurred to me about the whole towels thing, and that is that IF Guede sustained the cut to his hand during the assault and stabbing, he might have used one of the towels to staunch the flow of blood. If he were wearing gloves when he entered the house (an obvious accessory for someone planning to B&E through a broken window), he might have put the glove back onto his cut hand at some point in order to contain the bleeding. This would also explain why there were no drops or smears of Guede's blood apparently found in the cottage.

A friend of mine sent a little email to the Examiner about Mr. Richie posing as a fake former Washington Post writer in order to write articles about himself. Looks like the Examiner figured that one out pretty quickly.

Edit: Rose, yes, the poetry scams. I had friends fall for this as a kid. You write a poem online, then they send you a letter about how great your poem was and how it's going to be part of a book. I saw the poems. They were not good.... Then they get you to buy the book. Good times good times.

Thanks for the better translation, katy. I strongly believe the lawyers instructed all three of the defendants to write their diaries, as well as what to write. It is possible that Rudy had told his lawyers he found the towels in Meredith's room, but they thought that sounded bad for some reason, so they told him to write that he got them out of the bathroom. Maybe they thought that would make it look more like he had made an effort at trying to save her or something. This is all speculation and it doesn't make any difference, but it's one possible explanation for why there was no evidence of Rudy in the bathroom.

Daric has added some comments at PMF about those nasty FOA protesters that swarmed him and his Mom the day after he changed his mind from innocence to guilt:

The protesters was not a spoof sadly, I.E the reason I'm out of town with my mother at the moment. The day after I changed my opinion of Knox my mother & I ran into a group of people that we had never recognized before, and they began to shout nasty remarks @ her for my change in opinion.

So I than jumped in & shouted back, and it just wasn't pretty. We ran into them literally at the grocery story not far from my house at all, the creepy part? How people even found out where I live.

It appears he and his Mom are now in hiding. Alas, poor Daric.

Do you think he is laughing his head off by now?

I think Daric has been laughing for several days. :D

No I don't think he is laughing his head off. I think he expects people to buy into his made up celebrity. Googling his name, he's put a LOT of effort into trying to make a fake brand/persona of himself.

Edit: It is funny to see that the little guy has taken over PMF and made it even more nonsensical than ever. If this is a covert plan, it totally worked.

I agree. This goes way beyond a simple RickRolling. There seem to be a few that are starting to have some doubt. As one of their posters said recently on another site, "so many misconceptions, so little time".

I give Stilicho credit where credit is due. I think he was the first to see that Richie-gate wasn't exactly improving the forum or doing anyone any good by indulging the poor little squirt (if i have some misconception about how it looked from my vantage, feel free to correct Stilicho, if you're still reading here.)

I seriously doubt he's a little guy.

I do have to hand it to him for the amount of planning this sort of thing takes. Not only does he write everything that is written about him on the internet, but he also writes all the e-mails and tweets that he claims to be receiving from other people. He also announced that someone had contacted all the major local media about him -- which means he must have done that, too.

Not to mention all the fake names -- at least four or five of his own; one for the author of the Examiner articles; one for his "publicist, agent and legal rep" - lol - and one for each of the other "authors" that has written something about him online. Then there are the four boyfriends....

I'm putting my money on Fast Pete. He already seems a little suspicious.

OK, and I'll take SA, it's a bet.

Hey, speaking of SA, does anyone else find it odd that SA returned to PMF and LondonJohn returned to JREF within an hour of one another? Both after long absences? And they're both from London? 'Fess up, LJ!

You are right, so you are in with Stilicho? I will make up a So many misconceptions, so little time award that the winner can have for just some minor shipping and handling charges.

Daric is a simple case of someone trying to make themselves into a "self made celebrity". He saw the number of hits to his site spike after he wrote about AK, and then wrote fake articles about how all the teens of Tacoma were getting the news about the case from his website. He claimed to read the Massei report and change his mind "when he saw how Raffaele walked out of the house with a knife" but that is an obvious lie. I think he is along the spectrum of people who lie to garner attention. E.g. he said he had AK as a camp counselor, that inside sources said MK had an affair with Patrick, that he graduated from HS at 16 and is going to college, that he was blocked from going to the grocery store (library?) by a mob of pro AK protestors. I am puzzled by what is going through the minds of the pmf people, it is like a group psychosis or something. The issue is how he folded into the warped mentality of pmf.
