Way to go Mississippi!!!

What reasons for banning interracial marriage aren't based in ignorance?

Hatred or indifference.

Calling these people ignorant implies a lack of knowledge is a source of their views. I would be surprised if there is an argument for interracial marriage they have not heard. They just reject all of them.

Like gender it is a purely social construct based commonly on certain physical traits. Just because it has no biological basis does not mean it is not real enough to impact peoples lives.

 the last time i checked there was a biological basis for gender. :eye-poppi

What's wrong with "Asian" if you don't know where else they're from? I'm not going to call a Frenchman "German" just because I can't remember what French people are like.

I don't like it because it's not very precise. Someone born in Afghanistan, Syria, or Israel is as Asian as someone born in China or Japan.

 oh thanks, i believed Gender is just another word for Sex.

Well, it is a lot of the time because so many people use them interchangeably. Ideally people would distinguish between the two, but it's very common not to which just makes it that much more confusing. I'm sure that you could, for example, find some fairly educated and authoritative source using "sex" to mean "gender" and "gender" to mean "sex" if you looked for a while.

So I guess what I'm saying is, don't feel bad about not knowing the difference.

I love walking around telling people, "You can't trust those greedy Eurasians! They are all the same! I'd die before I let my daughter marry an Eurasian."

Here's to the country that you've torn out the heart of.
Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of.
....................... Phil Ochs, several decades ago.

No more right back then than it is now, but it sure felt swell to be able to paint things in such black and white colors.

I just read the Salon article, and the PPP press release. Not much information about hard numbers. I couldn't even find the total number of people who were polled. At the very end of the data, it breaks down the illegal marriage issue by age. If the survey is correct, tolerance increases with age.

The PPP did state that they planned to release results about Democrats later. Wonder what that will be like?

Why do the Amish call all non-Amish "English"? And how did Germans become "Pennsylvania Dutch"?

The Amish were a splinter group of German speaking (mostly Swiss) Mennonites who followed the teachings of Jacob Ammann. They settled in the English colonies of America both as a refuge from religious persecution, and as a way to isolate themselves from the undesirable effects of unwanted social practices.

It is not very surprising that they came to call everyone else "English", since at the time that they settled in Pennsylvania (among other areas) nearly everyone else around them was.

... English, that is.

"Pennsylvania Dutch" is an Anglophone mangling of "Deitsch" or "Deutsch".

:( Sorry

What I meant was that I cannot remember what the local name for Mongolia is. You know, the country sitting between China and Russia? I'm making the assumption that they have their own name for their country, I could be wrong and Mongolia is just the closest westerners can pronounce.

I've never used the term "Mongol" for anything other than a person from Mongolia.

Is this a serious question or one of those "gotcha!" questions? Because frankly, I don't want to waste my time if it's the latter.

Oh, ok! I got confused and assumed you were being like my Great Aunt when she still refers to African-Americans and "coloreds".

I'm sorry and nevermind!

I agree. Asia's kind of a big place. I try not to use it unless I'm not sure and even then I'll do my best to add a modifer like "south" or "east" if I'm at least that certain.

Just for the record, in case anyone was curious but not so much that they looked it up:
SURVEY said:
PPP surveyed 400 usual Mississippi Republican primary voters from March 24th to 27th.
The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.9%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed
and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

Is that what you were looking for, or did you mean something else?
