Or at least made to issue regular payments to the medical profession. We could figure it out capitation, based on the overall incidence of particular cancers in the general population compared to the patient base of each practice. That would be the easiest way to blur the link and wiggle the numbers, so the practices would get more money and the manufacturers wouldn't have such a direct customer-to-patient link like you'd get if they only paid for each particular smoker's case. This is totally workable.

You know one of the better ways to kill a fairly decent argument dead, mere seconds after it's born? March onto an internet forum and demand and declare that you speak for everyone, and that your argument, your position, is so absolutely correct that violating the rights of citizens concerning a legal activity just makes the best sense, darn it.

"Assault" part I can buy. Suicide is not illegal everywhere, and I consider such laws hideous assault on personal freedom. Suicide, however fast or slow, should be an inalienable right of any individual. One can be deprived of liberty for various reasons, but never of suicide option. IOW, every jail and prison cell should come with a suicide switch.

Perhaps you're being sarcastic, but I agree with you. The negative externalities of smoking, especially economic costs to the nation, far outweigh the benefits individuals get from drugging themselves.

Have you really considered all the benefits individuals get from smoking? It makes them less nervous, more pleasant to be around (as long as they aren't smoking at that particular moment), and helps keep them thinner which reduces the costs of obesity. It also looks cool, and makes them cooler, and therefore improves the tone of the surroundings. And they carry lighters or matches, so in case of emergency power failures they are able to quickly produce light.

Life is for enjoying, and people should be able to enjoy whatever they wish as long as it isn't harming anyone else. "Economic costs" isn't really a harm to you--unless you are in perfect health yourself, you are costing them money as well. You can't possibly calculate all the numbers and variables that would be involved in proving that smoking causes economic harm to the general public. In fact, in many areas (such as my own employment) it's decidedly beneficial.
