You seem to think people want to legally restrict the book burner. I don't think anyone is suggesting that. I was using Phelps as an example of what should be legal but should not be encouraged.

No. Martin Luther King pissed people off but not because he was being a dick.

My support for your protest rests solely on its logical and moral foundation. In other words, I am much more supportive of dicks if they make a good argument.

Rights carry responsibilities, and one should at least consider the results. After all, the purpose of free speech isn't to trade recipes, but to have actual effects on other people. And that includes really, really offending people, as the Supreme Court ruled a few weeks ago regarding those Westboro savages.


So: "I burn this Koran for the purpose of really pissing off people, which may give fire to the Middle East by aiding demagogues there."


Remember the demagogues have outlawed counter-speech. "We burn the Koran precisely because you say we can't" won't even get to those controlled populaces as a counter-argument.




By the way, anyone wanna bet this Koran-burning ass thinks the US flag burning should be made illegal? Anyone? Anyone?

I think burning the Koran (or however you spell the damn thing) is irrelevant - to me. If I was Muslim, *personally*, I still wouldn't care much - it's not like the guy is going to actually prevent the text & ideas from getting to people who want to read it - and it's not the paper that is "holy", it's the words and concepts. Likewise, if some moron wants to try to anger people by burning, well, whatever book they want... Reacting is going to to give them the response and attention that they want.

Burning books - back in the day when printing was difficult, rare, expensive, etc. - was a lot different than it is now. Now... shoot, just recycle the paper, dude. The text is still available at any public library, or on Kindle, or a hundred other places.

I think any nation who has their flags made in another country shouldn't care anyway; surely the "ass" knows that China makes United States flags.

It's because this ass believes in the magic of symbols. He views the world as being full of objects that are imbued with significance beyond their material composition. Some are "holy" objects, such as copies of his preferred versions of the Bible and (likely) the US flag, whereas other objects are "evil" such as the Koran. Presumably most objects are neutral, but you never know. He might think all spoons are sanctified by God and worthy of reverence, or that touching a Japanese automobile will infect you with demons.

It's really one step up from animism. If he reaches the point where the magical forces of objects move to having personalities, then he's there. In which case he wouldn't burn a Koran for fear of releasing demons from it.

Exactly! What you need to do is wrap it in heavy duty tin foil, lock it spiritually then bury it six feet deep.

Or you could just bin it.

I put my copy of the Bible on my bookshelf between a yaoi manga and the works of David Sedaris. I think if the book were sentient it would find that considerably more tormenting.
