Wait, so Chick's argument is that the actual authentic Greek version of God's word was written in the 1500s?
I dealt once (on alt.atheism) with a KJV-only believer who quite seriously maintained that it was wrong and unkind and demonstrative of Satanic influence for other posters to be impolite to
her, but
she could be as insulting and discourteous to
us as she liked
because the Bible said so. After all, 2 Corinthians 11:6 reads, in the KJV, "But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge".
Of course the word "rude" , in the early 17th century, meant "crude" or "unsophisticated", and other translations reflect this: they have Paul describing himself as "unskilled in speaking", or "unlearned", or "not a trained speaker". But according to this poster, if the KJV used "rude", then "rude" is what Paul meant: he was being insulting and impolite and
rude to other people, and that meant it was okay for her to be
rude to us but wrong and sinful for us (unbelievers) to be
rude to her.
I know, every time he has one of his characters express bafflement ("Jesus? Who was he?") about simple biblical concepts that just about anyone in the Western world would know, I express some bafflement of my own.
That's my favorite scene in
The Little Princess (bolding and italics as in the original). Bear in mind that this conversation takes place in a middle-class, middle-American suburban household:
"Mr. Spencer, I'm sure the thought of your daughter dying breaks your heart, right?"
"
Of course!"
"Well, God was
even more heartbroken when He sent His Son from heaven to die on earth."
"Why did God have to do
THAT?"
"Because all people are sinners and God would never allow sin to enter heaven. Because of our sin, we
ALL deserve hell. The
only way man could ever get into heaven was for someone sinless to die in his place and pay the penalty for sin."
"Who could that be?"
"
That someone was God the Son, Jesus Christ."
"You mean Jesus died for
US!"
"That's
exactly right!"

Jesus hops into the fire with Shadrack, Meshack and Abednigo. Theres a nice picture of people smiling with 666 on their foreheads.
My favorite part in this is where the word "dunghill" is footnoted, "See dictionary."
Besides the obvious sick implications you already mentioned, I noticed this--
Victim: Bad things were done
to me....
Pastor: Jesus'....blood can wash away
your sins.

indeed. My mom went through phases where she watched the 700 Club: one of these was at the time of the McMartin Preschool trials, and the show's topic that day was child molestation. One guest on the show, speaking to any children who might be watching, told them (paraphrased), "If anything bad is happening to you, if someone's doing something wrong or making you do something you don't like, tell your parents. And if you can't, tell a teacher or a policeman or your minister." Whereupon Pat Robertson's co-host, Ben Kinchlow, inserted, "And when you speak to your minister, be sure and tell him you're sorry for your sins, and want to acceptjesuschristasyoursavior" -- completely failing to realize that a child, listening, would hear this as, "And be sure to tell the minister you're sorry for your
sin of being molested."
